18U World Series Game Recaps

6/11

9:00am- The Florida Sox 18U took a 9-3 victory over Xtreme Baseball. Emilio Polanco went 3-3 with a triple and a RBI. While Shane Marshall added a 2-2 effort with 2 RBI's. Florida Sox pitching combined for 2 hits wile standout Travis Ronco threw 4 in innings allowing 1 hit.

Chi Town Cream took down eXposure Florida today with pitching performances from Teague Conrad and Tristin Lively. Conrad had 3.1 innings pitched with 5 strikeouts, topping his fastball at 86. Lively cleaned it up for the Cream with 6 strikeouts in 2.2 innings with a fastball topping out at 91 and a curveball at 84. The Cream’s scoring came from the bottom half of the line up with Jack Rigoni and Andrew Auton having a hit and a run each.

11:30am- North East Baseball was all over Chandler World 18u today taking the win 6-1. Bobby Sparling led North East Baseball offensively with a double and a home run racking up 4 RBI's. Shortstop Ben Kailher had a triple and scored a run while first basemen Jacob Steinberg had a double with a run scored. Tyler Snow and Max Rippl secured the win for North East Baseball. Snow had 6 strikeouts through 4 innings with a top fastball at 87 and Rippl closed it out topping out at 89.

The SWFL Canes came away victorious over the Diamond Prospects 17U in a 8-4 contest. Both teams combined for 17 hits.  For the Canes Noah Rivera and Brandyn Gatenby both had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. For the Prospects Ryan Sablon went 2-3 with 2 RBIs.

Stephen Wilmer played hero for eXposure Florida with a pinch-hit walk off single in the bottom of the 7th, pushing across the only run of the game. Grant Gaspard of eXposure Florida cruised on the mound to the tune of 7 shutout innings, scattering 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 9. Xtreme Baseball’s Dannie Goodman started strong, only allowing 1 hit and 2 walks before being pulled after 4 innings of work.

9:00am- North East Baseball took the win in a tight game against SWFL Canes 3-1. All three of North East Baseball’s runs were knocked in by EH Bobby Sparling who had a single and a double today. Lead off batter Ben Kailher had two hits and scored 2 runs. Starting pitcher Tyler Tuthill went 3 innings with 6 strikeouts with a fastball touching 86. The centerfielder for SWFL Canes JanMikell Bastardo, had a single and a double with an RBI but it wasn’t enough to pull out the win.
Chi Town Cream took down Xtreme Baseball today in a 9-1 game. The Cream’s four hole hitter, Anthony Herron, had two hits with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Right fielder Brian Martin had a double that brought in 2 RBIs. The pitching for Chi Town Cream held it down with 3 innings out of Kyle Wisch and 2 from Zachary Scaffer.
eXposure Florida and Dbacks Langley Blaze battled in a close one this morning but neither team could pull away as they ended in 3-3 tie. eXposure was on top for most of the game leading 3-0 through 6 1/2 but Dbacks fought in the bottom of the 7th to tie it up. Miguel Soto led eXposure offensively with 2 hits while Zack Smith and Austin Schmitt both knocked in a run. Jared Crossley, Brendan Nicoll, and Holdem Cumiskey all had a pair of hits for Dbacks but Justin Thorsteinson was the difference maker smashing a 3 run homerun to tie it. Andrew Williamson threw great for eXposure going 5 scoreless innings and striking out 8.
Slammers Martin defeated the Diamond Prospects 17U today by a score of 7-0. J.D. Wadleigh led the way throwing 2 shutout innings with 5 Strikeouts and 2-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs. Justin Briggs went 2-2 with 2 RBIs to top off a dominant performance by Slammers Martin.

11:30am- Slammers Martin took a 6-2 victory over North East Baseball with all 6 of the slammers runs coming in the first and second inning. For the slammers, Brennen Dorighi went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and Jake Haze went 2-2. For North East Baseball, Ryan Cervone had a good day at the plate getting 2 hits, an RBI, and run scored.
Dbacks Langley Blaze get their first win of the tournament after defeating Florida Sox. Nick Holeeshaw and Russell Young both had a pair hits for the Dbacks while Brendan Nicoll, Holdem Cumiskey, and Justin Thorsteinson all knocked in 2 runs. Their pitching staff (Tate Dearing, Jacob McDermott, and Kyle Pfeifer) combined for 5 K's, 4 hits, and only 1 run. Emilio Polanco recorded a hit and RBI for Florida Sox.
Diamond Prospects also cruised to their first win of the tournament after beating Chandler World 6-2. Michael Piulats had a solid day at the plate hitting a double and knocking in a run. Juan Osorio and Jd Herrera also recorded an RBI for Diamond Prospects. On the mound for them, Juan Osorio and Ryan Sablon struck out a combined 10 hitters, only letting up 1 earned run on 2 hits. Keneth Badillo had a hit and RBI for Candler World.

6/13

9:00am- North East Baseball improve to 3-1 in the tournament after a win against Diamond Prospects 17U this morning. North East received help offensively from almost their entire lineup but Jj Sousa stood out with 2 hits, 2 RBI's, and a run scored. Avery Plum also stood out for North East but his performance was on the mound. Avery Plum threw 5 scoreless innngs, only letting up 2 hits, and striking out 6.

In a huge game between SWFL Canes and Slammers Martin, SWFL came out on top 2-1. It was scoreless through 5 until SWFL put up 2 runs in the top half of the 6th with RBI's from Brandyn Gatenby and Mason Walker. Jake Haze knocked in a run in the bottom of the 6th for Slammers but it wasn't enough as SWFL held them off in the 7th. Both starting pitchers had complete games and threw outstanding. For SWFL, Austin Quinones let up 1 run on 5 hits and struck out 3 while topping out at 81 MPH. Wyatt Wendell was on the mound for Slammers only letting up 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out 4, and topping out at 84 MPH.

Chi Town Cream and Florida Sox also played in a close one with Chi Town coming out on top 4-2. Andrew Tenison led them offensively with 2 hits, including a double, 2 RBI's, and a run scored. Josue Rangel and Anthony Herron both had a pair of hits as well. Jean Espinal and Blaine Major knocked in the runs for Florida Sox.

11:30am- Chandler World defeated Slammers Martin 3-1 powered behind multi-hit games from Jonathan Alonso and Ricardo Vargas. Vargas had 2 doubles and an RBI. Jeissy De La Criz went 6 innings for Chandler World only letting up 1 run and striking out 3. Brodie Marino led the Slammers in hits with 2 and Hayden VanDePol knocked in their only run.

Dbacks Langley Blaze stay undefeated as they beat Xtreme Baseball after big performances from Jared Crossley (3-3, 2 RBI's, 1 R), Brendan Nicoll (2-3, 3 RBI's, 1 R), and Holdem Cumiskey (2-3, 2 RBI's, 2 R). Dbacks pitching staff (Justin Thorsteinson and Matthew Dalgleish) combined for 4 strikeouts and only let up 1 run on 5 hits.

Florida Sox and eXposure Florida both exploded for 21 combined hits as eXposure edged Florida Sox 10-8. Miguel Soto led eXposure in hits with 3 while Austin Schmitt led the team in RBI's with 4. Schmitt and Hayden Cooper also had a pair of hits. For Florida Sox, Emilio Polanco led the team in hits with 2 while Shane Marshall and Juan Garcia both had a pair of RBI's.

2:00pm- Chi Town Cream finish pool play undefeated and officially clinch the 1 seed in their pool after a win against Dbacks Langley Blaze. Tyler McDonough and Anthony Herron both recorded a pair of hits for Chi Town as well as each knocking in a run. Javier Ramos took the rubber for Chi Town and threw a complete game striking out 8 and only letting up 1 earned run. Dbacks got a pair of hits and RBI out of Russell Young.

In a game that had significant playoff implications, SWFL Canes and Chandler World end their game in a 2-2 tie. The Canes got a double and RBI from Carson Smith while getting a solid outing on the mound from Doug Belanger. Belanger went 6.2 IP on letting up 2 runs, striking out 3, and topping out at 81 MPH. Reese Mile was the starter for Chandler World and also threw well in 6 IP striking out 7 and only letting up 1 earned run on 3 hits. His fastball topped out at 89 MPH. Ricardo Vargas went 2 for 3 for Chandler World including a double and triple. Jonathan Alonso and Keneth Badillo knocked in both runs for them.

Quarterfinals- The first quarterfinal was a matchup between Slammers Martin, the 3 seed in pool A, vs Dbacks Langley Blaze, the 2 seed in pool B. Slammers exploded for 4 runs in the top of the 3rd and the game was scoreless after that giving them a 4-0 win and advancing to semifinals where they will face North East Baseball. Kasey Koppelmaa threw a complete game shutout for Slammers only letting up 2 hits and striking out 6. His fastball topped out at 86 MPH. Offensively, Hayden VanDePol had 2 hits while Brennen Dorighi had 3 RBI's.

The other quarterfinal matchup was between eXposure Florida and SWFL Canes. It was close through 3 1/2 innings but SWFL put up a 4 spot in the bottom of the 4th and eXposure couldn't pull out the comeback. SWFL Canes win in a 6-2 final and will play Chi Town Cream in the semifinals. Nelson Smith threw a complete game gem for SWFL only letting up 1 earned run, striking out 3, and touching 86 MPH. Smith also had 2 hits along with Noah Rivera, Doug Belanger, and Adrian Soler. Belanger and Soler also knocked in 2 runs.

Semifinals- Chi Town Cream continues to crush the ball every single game, this time defeating SWFL Canes to advance to the championship. Tyler McDonough and Michael Brewer carried most of the offensive load for Chi Town. McDonough went 2 for 2 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI's, and 2 runs scored. Brewer had 1 hit and knocked in 3 runs. Ben Crulkshank was on the mound for Chi Town throwing a complete game shutout on only 5 hits and striking out 5. His fastball touched 89 MPH. Noah Rivera had a pair of hits for SWFL.

The semifinal game between North East Baseball and Slammers Martin was possibly the best game of the tournament thus far as it was scoreless through 7. Both starters were scoreless with Reggie Parris of Slammers going 6.1 innings, only 2 hits, and 4 strikeouts while Jaydan Martinez of North East went 5.2 innings, only letting up 1 hit, and striking out 7. The offense finally came in the top of the 8th as Hayden VanDePol smacked a ball down the right field line stretch out a triple and score the runner on first. The next at bat, Harris Williams hit a line drive in the 5-6 hole to score VanDePol and make it 2-0. North East was unable to produce in the bottom half as Slammers Martin win 2-0 and advance to the championship tomorrow against Chi Town Cream.

Championship- As everyone expected, this championship game was a hard fought battle as Slammers Martin and Chi Town Cream faced off to see who would take home the hardware. There were hits throughout the entire order for both teams and each pitching staff did an incredible job as well. The championship started with Slammers Martin taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Harris William lead off the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out to 2B, and eventually scored on Brennan Dorighi's single to right. Chi Town came back to tie it 1-1 in the bottom of the 3rd after Kevin Garcia's HBP and scored on Josue Rangel's single. Slammers responded right back in the top of the 4th as Hayden VanDePol knocked in Jake Haze. Great pitching and defense kept the game scoreless until the end as Slammers Martin defeat Chi Town Cream 2-1 to become our 2018 18U World Series Champions. Slammers third baseman, Justin Briggs had a great game 3 for 3 with a double and Josue Rangel stood out for Chi Town with 2 hits, an RBI, and run scored. On the mound for Slammers, Isaac Hayen went 5 innings, only letting up 1 run, and touching 85 MPH. Brennen Dorighi also threw 2 scoreless innings for Slammers. Our MVPitcher of the tournament was Kasy Koppelmaa from Slammers Martin as he threw 8 total innings, went 1-0, struck out 9, and didn't allow a run on only 2 hits. Our MVP was Anthony Herron from Chi Town Cream. He ended the tournament with 8 hits, 6 RBI's, and 2 stolen bases.

We’ve concluded the first major event on the high school schedule, the PG High School Showdown, and it was an epic weekend in Hoover. The event was littered with talent and these rankings reflect just that. St. John Bosco (CA) holds onto the first spot in this update and are being pushed by an IMG Academy (FL) team that’s 8-0 after winning the High School Showdown as well as beating two preseason top-10 teams in the first few weeks of the season. March 3 Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Cider Canon, OF, Duke  The Duke Blue Devils (11-3) went through massive changes in the offseason, with a new coaching staff and heavy roster turnover like is often seen in the college game today.  That hasn’t held them back as they have kind of flown under the radar on their way to a tie for the most wins in the nation.  They won 4 out 5 games last week and Cider Canon was the driving force behind their offensive onslaught.  The 5-11/180 outfielder from San Marino, CA put together an incredible week collecting 9 hits in 14 at-bats, good for a .643 BA, scoring 7 runs, with 3 walks, 4 home runs and driving in a total of 10 runs.  After a successful couple years at Davidson College, Cider made the trip north to Durham and has fit right into the Blue Devil’s high-octane offense.  For the season, he is...

Three weeks in and we are beginning to see some separation across the country.  The quality and depth, or lack thereof, are becoming evident and the conference segment for several conferences starts up this weekend.  Midweek games continue to be a tossup and only the teams that are strong on both sides of the ball have been able to maintain momentum.  We have a new No. 1 in this week’s poll as UCLA (9-2) has already accumulated 5-wins against teams that are currently or were previously ranked in the Top 25.  With last weekend’s sweep of No. 17 Tennessee (8-3), Texas A&M (10-1) and No. 4 Mississippi State (11-1) at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series, the Bruins leap now No. 2 LSU (11-1) and No. 3 Georgia Tech (11-1) to take over the top spot.  The Texas Longhorns (11-0) are up to No. 5 as one of only 3-remaining undefeated teams in the nation,...
