TNXL Academy takes 17u PG Super25

SANFORD, Fla. – 14 teams clashed for the 17u PG Super25 National Championship, and on Championship Friday, TNXL Academy came out on top with an 8-6 victory over Mid Atlantic Show 17u-Kerr at the BOOMBAH Sports Complex in Sanford.

Leading 4-3 in the fifth inning, TNXL used a three-run frame spearheaded by Elian Roman (2019, Orlando, Fla.), who lined a two-out RBI single, and Chenar Brown (2019, Clermont, Fla.) plating two more runs with a double to right to provide the cushion needed to withstand a late rally from the Show in the seventh.

With two runs already across and the tying run at the plate, Florida State commit Tyrell Brewer (2019, Orlando, Fla.) locked down the title for TNXL with a strikeout to close out a three-inning stint of relief in support of starter Hylan Hall (2019, Ocoee, Fla.).

TNXL was lifted by six shutout innings by tournament MV-Pitcher Dylan Simmons (2019, Jacksonville, Fla.) to come away with a 2-0 semifinal victory over the Salty Dawgs.

Brown drove in the lone runs in the semifinal with one swing of that bat as his two-run triple in the fourth inning gave Simmons, a Florida State commit, all the support he needed as he allowed just one hit and struck out six.

On the other side of the bracket, the Show used a six-run blitz in the second inning of their 6-4 semifinal victory over Stars Baseball 17U Red that included a three-run home run from Fairleigh Dickinson signee Theodore Sparks (2018, Woodbury, N.J.) to advance to the final.

St. Joesph’s commit Brandon Drapeau (2019, Mullica Hill, N.J.) came an out away from a complete game for the Show in the semifinal, setting up the title game matchup of two teams featuring Division-I commits littered all across both rosters.

In the championship game, it was TNXL who went ahead in the first inning as Roman lined an RBI single to left with two outs.

In the second, TNXL added three more runs as they took advantage of a two-out error that brought in two runs and a wild pitch tacked on another to make it a 4-0 lead.

The Show fought back in the bottom of the third as they plated three runs with Drapeau lining an RBI single, and a bases-loaded walk and a fielder’s choice cutting the margin to just a run at 4-3.

After TNXL’s three-run fifth, with again all of its run coming with two outs, the Show put a rally together as three straight hits opened the home half. UNC-Charlotte commit Chase Burroughs (2019, Mechanicsville, Md.) doubled to left to open the frame and came in to score on a Zach Fisher (2018, Hancocks Bridge, N.J.) single up the middle.

TNXL got great work out of Brewer, who came on for the starter Hall in the fifth, as the right-hander retired the next three batters to send the game to the sixth with a 7-4 lead for TNXL.

Hall, a Florida commit, produced an insurance run in the seventh as his two-out triple to right kept the inning alive and he was able to race home on a ball in the dirt to make it an 8-4 game with TNXL needing three more outs.

The Show were gifted back-to-back walks to start the seventh, and Drapeau again came up with a run-scoring hit as he doubled to left to make it 8-5.

After a groundout plated another run, another walk issued by Brewer brought the potential winning run to the plate with just one out. The Show tried to get their trail runner into scoring position on a steal attempt, but TNXL catcher Douglas Kirkland (2019, Longwood, Fla.) gunned down the would-be base stealer for the second out and Brewer wrapped up the game with his fourth strikeout in relief to cap TNXL’s title run.

Brown was selected as the tournament MV-Player as he finished with a .500 average (10-for-20) over eight games, with three doubles and three triple and finished with eight runs batted in.

For TNXL, Roman had a hot week at the plate as he batted .571 with eight hits in 14 at-bats and nine RBI and Simmons added to his eight total innings of shutout baseball on the mound for the week with a .368 average (7-for-19) at the plate with six RBI.

Drapeau led the tournament in hits with 12 and batted .522 with a home run and seven RBI for the Show.

Weather makes Georgia/Bronx Bombers 14u co-champs

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mother Nature wouldn’t allow a matchup between the Georgia Bombers and Bronx Bombers in the championship game of the 14U Super25 National Championship as storms swept across the BOOMBAH Sports Complex in Sanford Friday afternoon, thus making each team a co-champion of the event.

Each team began the tournament in the same pool as 24 teams set off to compete for the title to start the week. Both teams got off to 3-0 starts before meeting on Wednesday to virtually decide the pool’s winner, and it was the Bronx Bombers coming away victorious 5-1 thanks to a four-run fifth inning to take control of the game.

Evan Maloney (2022, Saunderstown, R.I.) and Justin Sanchez (2022, Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined to strike out 12 batters, with Sanchez working the final four innings in relief, striking out seven and not walking a batter to pick up the victory.

With the Bronx Bombers going 5-0 in pool play, they entered bracket play as the No. 3 overall seed. On the flip side, the Georgia Bombers dropped another pool play contest, but advanced through as the No. 8 seed with a 3-2 record.

In the quarterfinals, the Bronx Bombers defeated Sticks Baseball Academy Elite 2022 2-0 behind a superb pitching performance from Yohairo Cuevas (2022, Yonkers, N.Y.), who tossed a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts.

For the Georgia Bombers, they had to match up with the No. 1 overall seed Gulf Coast Fury, but the offense came up with two big innings as a four-run third and a five-run sixth lifted the Bombers to a 10-3 victory to advance to the semifinals.

Cole Munhall (2022, Cumming, Ga.) went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two RBI for the Bombers, and Riley Sanford (2022, Gainesville, Ga.) collected two hits and an RBI in the win for the Bombers.

In the semifinals, the Bronx Bombers matched up with Morris Chiefs American 14U and ran out to a 4-0 lead through five innings and hung on for a 4-2 win to advance into the championship game.

Adonys Guzman (2021, Bronx, N.Y.) opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the first inning, and in the fourth inning, Evan Diaz (2021, Yonkers, N.Y.) brought in a run with an RBI single to lead the way offensively for the Bombers.

The Georgia Bombers had to combat a team from their home state in the semifinals as they matched up with Titans Baseball 14’s Blue, and in the early going, the Bombers quickly fell behind 2-0 after the first inning.

In the third, a five-run deluge saw Stanford, Munhall and Cody McGill (2022, Marietta, Ga.) deliver RBI singles to help the Bombers forge ahead 5-2.

After allowing the Titans to draw a run closer in the home half, the Bombers added two more runs in the fourth, with Dee Oliver (2023, Martin, Ga.) bringing home one of the tallies with an RBI single in the frame to put the Bombers ahead 7-3.

Munhall relieved Stanford on the mound in the fifth and surrendered two runs in the sixth to allow the Titans to draw to within a run at 7-6 and had to negotiate a potential threat in the seventh.

With two outs, Munhall allowed a single and walked a batter to bring the potential tying run just a base hit away, but the right-hander finished the game off by getting a harmless flyout to center to send the Bombers on their way to the championship game.

Despite the title not being decided with what was likely going to be a matchup of evenly matched teams, two individuals were honored for their performances throughout the week.

Diaz was selected as the tournament’s MV-Player for the Bronx Bombers, as he batted .353 (6-for-17) with eight RBI in seven games.

Guzman also had a strong week at the plate for the Bombers, batting .357 with five hits in 14 at-bats and drove in five runs.

For the Georgia Bombers, Charlie Jones (2022, Cumming, Ga.) was chosen as the MV-Pitcher as he appeared in three contests and allowed only one hit in five innings while striking out four.

Offensively, the Bombers were paced by McGill’s .538 average (7-for-13), with Stanford and Brian Garmon II (2022, Cumming, Ga.) leading the team with six RBI each.

Roman Keister (2030, Dade City, FL) Could not miss the barrel this weekend tallying 6 hits including 2 triples and 4 RBI. Starts the load early and controls his body well, the up the middle approach really plays in game. Also worked from off the mound for an inning and picked up a punch out.  Colton Russo (2030, Coral Springs, FL) Showed off the power burning outfielders all weekend. 5 hits including two triples that carried over the CF and RF heads. Has a good understanding about using the lower half in the swing and the bat to ball skills really impressed.  Karson Blakney (2030, St. Augustine, FL) Made his impact in a big way this week, collecting the win in the quarterfinals. Midseason Awards  Perfect Game Midseason Player of the Year:  Landon Hairston, OF, Arizona State  The season sophomore outfielder Landon Hairston is putting together is generational, even amongst the Hall of Fame talent Arizona State has fielded over the years.  Hairston, the 5-11/195 sophomore outfielder from Queen City, AZ has his club on track for another postseason appearance and they will make plenty of noise in the Big 12 regular season.  To put things in perspective on Hairston’s season, he is currently 5th in the nation in batting average, 3rd in hits, 8th in hits per game, tied for 2nd in home runs, tied for 5th in runs scored and is 4th in runs batted in so far.  He holds a batting average of .469 while slugging 1.027 and reaching base over half the time with an OBP of .551.  Hairston walks more than he strikes out and has 12 doubles, 17...

March 31st Perfect Game/Co-Players of the Week:  Landon Hairston, OF, Arizona State  The Arizona State Sun Devils (20-8) went (3-2) last week and now sit at No. 18 in our latest Top 25 poll.  They are proving that they are legitimate Big 12 contenders and Landon Hairston is making a strong case for National Player of the Year at the halfway point in the season.  The 5-11/195 sophomore outfielder from Queen City, AZ is putting up such loud numbers that they are almost hard to fathom.  In five games last week, the lefthanded hitter collected 12-hits in 19 Abs, scoring 13 runs on 6 walks, a double, 5 home runs and he drove in 11 runs on his own.  For the season, he has put together a slash line of .468/.991/.553 with 12 doubles, 15 round trippers, 45 RBIs, a 12:18 strikeout-to-walk ratio and he has swiped 8 bags so far.  It has been a special year for the...

Hudson December (2027, Woodland Hills, Calif.) showed flashes of his upside despite a somewhat uneven three-inning outing. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander struck out three while working through a couple of tough jams, though his command was inconsistent at times. He ran his fastball up to 87 mph on a pair of occasions and generally sat in the 83–85 range. He mixed in an upper-70s slider with varying shape and execution where it was most effective when thrown with proper intent, showing shorter, tighter depth. He also flashed a changeup against a few left-handed hitters. Mechanically, there’s a blend of positives and areas for development. He incorporates his lower half fairly well and moves down the mound with some pace and intent. March 24th Perfect Game/Player of the Week: Quinton Coats, IF, Cincinnati The Cincinnati Bearcats (19-7) are on the cusp of the Top 25 and are playing their best ball of the season. The offense has been the driving force behind their success, and it has been incredibly consistent having averaged 8.5-runs per game. In the middle of it all, Quinton Coats, is on pace for a historic season both within the program and on a national level. The 6-3/225 infielder from Olathe, KS has been launching home runs at a record pace and opponents seem to be powerless to stop his onslaught. With incredible strength in his hands, Coats creates easy loft and in 5 road games last week he collected 9 hits in 20 at-bats, with 4 home runs, 9 runs scored, and he drove in a total of 9 runs as well.
