Labor Day champs at LakePoint

Rivera's gem carries 5 Star to Freshman title

EMERSON, Ga. – A dominant pitching performance and enough offense gave 5 Star National PR Yellow the 2-0 victory over Heat 2022 on Monday morning in the championship of the 2018 Labor Day at LakePoint Freshman event.

Eduardo Rivera, the tournament’s MV-Pitcher, took the mound for 5 Star and pitched an absolute gem going five innings of one-hit dominant baseball striking out eight batters before giving way to his bullpen in Carlos Rodriguez and Diego Cobo. Rivera was in a groove from start to finish pounding the strike zone primarily with a fastball that reached as high as 88 mph. After handing the ball off to his bullpen, the duo of Rodriguez and Cobo got the job done as well combining for two innings of no-hit baseball.

While pitching was the story of the game for 5 Star the bats did come alive in the second inning where 5 Star put together two runs that were more than enough to earn the victory. Ened Perez, the extra hitter in the contest, was able to knock home a pair of baserunners with a clutch two-out double down the left field line. Sergio Rivera and Omar Melendez each knocked a base hit in the contest as well for 5 Star totaling the three hits for the team.

The MVP of the tournament was Brett Mason of Heat 2022 who finished off an impressive weekend at the plate, with seven hits in nine chances, good for a .778 batting average. Reaching base primarily by way of the single, Mason did also knock a double in Heat 2022’s first game of the tournament.

Rivera, the MV-Pitcher, was dominant in both of his appearances during the tournament combining for seven innings on the mound with 11 total strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

eXposure explodes for Underclass championship

EMERSON, Ga. – eXposure Underclass Fall White completed the perfect weekend, going 6-0 and culminating with a run-rule, championship victory of the underclass division of  Labor Day at LP against the Upstate Mavericks ST by a final score of 9-1. The game was knotted with no score through two full innings before the offense for eXposure got going with a four-run bottom of the third inning.

The middle of the order was a bright spot over the weekend for eXposure and they showed up in a big way during this inning as shortstop Rhett Hammontree collected an RBI single to break the scoreless tie. Former PG Select 14u participant Christian Moore followed that with a very nice piece of hitting as he took a fastball in on the hands and drove it high and far to the opposite field gap for a run-scoring ground rule double and Mississippi State commit Gehrig Ebel added a run-scoring single, with a passed ball run sprinkled in, to give eXposure a big lead.

The four runs were more than enough for starting pitcher AJ Montijo, who was simply spectacular and delivered six strong innings while only allowing one earned run while striking out six batters in the process. The uncommitted righthander ran his fastball up to 83 mph on the afternoon and consistently pounded the strike zone to the tune of no walks while working his pitches to either side of the plate.

The offense was not done, however, as eXposure collected five total runs over the final two frames to force a run rule. The highlight of the game was from leadoff man and eventual MVP Bradley Garland who collected a run-scoring triple into the left field corner that he scored on following a throwing error on the play. Hammontree collected the final RBI single of the game to finalize the score at 9-1. eXposure had a great weekend and it’s easy to see why they came away with the championship looking at both the talent on the roster and their impressive run differential of 55 runs scored to 9 runs allowed.

Garland was named the MVP of the tournament and finished the championship game with a 2-for-3 day. He hit .500 on the event with seven RBI and his presence loomed large in the championship game. Rylan Brown of Upstate was named the MV-Pitcher for the event and during his start he was fairly impressive with ten strikeouts and only three hits allowed and extends his remarkable scoreless inning streak in PG events to 22 straight.

MGBA clinches second straight Upperclass title

EMERSON, Ga. – For the second year in a row, MGBA are champions of the upperclass division of the Labor Day at LP. It was business as usual for MGBA in the championship game as a run-rule victory of 11-3 put them on top of the Rawlings Southeast Prospects and champions of the weekend.

The offense was rolling from the get-go for MGBA as they scored at least one run in every inning for a final tally of eleven runs scored on twelve hitters. Three runs were scored in the first two innings, with the noteworthy blow coming from the lefthanded swing of Michael Harris II who clobbered a run-scoring ground rule double deep to the right centerfield gap that just missed being a home run.

The pitching was solid for MGBA as Dexter Redding turned in a quality performance. He allowed only one earned run in three and two-thirds innings while doing a good job at pitching to contact and getting a lot of weak contact on the ground. Brandon Nugue and Rahmir Vaughn combined for the final two frames of scoreless baseball to clinch the game.

Nearly every hitter in the starting lineup had at least one hit including Jordan Rome who notched two singles and led the team in RBI (3) on the afternoon and Myles Austin who added the second double of the game to bring home Harris on a 96 mph screamer down the pull side line.

MGBA finished the tournament with an undefeated mark at 5-0 with a positive run differential of 28 runs scored to 10 runs allowed. This tournament championship makes it the second consecutive year that MGBA has won the upperclass Labor Day at LP championship as they also claimed the crown in 2017.

Myles Austin was named the MVP of the tournament for MGBA. The PG All-American hit .462 over the course of the event with two doubles, one triple, and six stolen bases in total. Austin’s teammate Michael Harris II was named the MV-Pitcher for the event. Harris touched 93 mph while striking out ten batters over five innings of one-run baseball including earning the win in the semifinals of the event.

MLK East Scout Notes Recap

‘28 OF Jakob Groeschel (OH) continues to impress with the bat on the circuit, picked up 2 2Bs in the first game today. Really athletic, went 4.4 on turn; easy to dream on all the traits. #MLKEast @PG_OhioValley pic.twitter.com/wOIwnGKnkg — Perfect Game Florida (@Florida_PG) January 17, 2026 2028 OF Jakob Groeschel (Springfield, Ohio) broke out at this event last year hitting a casual .909, and although he didn’t turn in quite the same performance, he hit a strong .462 with 4 extra-base hits, 5 walks, 5 bags and only struck out once. He’s a pretty dynamic athlete who can do a lot of things well, but the bat is the calling card as he just lives on the barrel and has no problem handling all kinds of pitching. It’s a simple swing, but he’s got fast hands and he can really impact the ball without being overly physical yet.  2030 RHP Michael Vazquez...

The start of another high school season is right around the corner in a handful of states and with that, as always, comes our Preseason High School Top-50. A whopping twenty states are represented in the initial Top-50, a number that is staggering when you look at the amount of depth some of these rosters have across the nation. Leading the group is St. John Bosco (CA), a team that brought home a CIF Southern D1 title in 2025 and bring back a strong group of seniors to look to repeat. Stoneman Douglas (FL) is a name most people should know by now in the high school ranks and comes in as our preseason #2 team, looking to win their sixth straight state championship in Florida. Orange Lutheran (CA) had a good case for preseason #1 but come it an No. 3, bringing a roster with seven seniors ranked inside the top-200 in the country to the table. Four other Florida schools are represented...
