Fall Champs invade the desert

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Play at both the Perfect Game Upperclass and Freshman Fall National Championships Protected by G-Form begins Friday at three MLB Cactus League spring training complexes in Phoenix’s West Valley.

Those two events will run Friday, Sept. 14 through Monday, Sept. 17, with games being played at the Camelback Ranch Complex (Dodgers, White Sox) in Glendale, the Goodyear (Ariz.) Ballpark Complex (Indians, Reds) and the Peoria (Ariz.) Sports Complex (Mariners, Padres).

The PG Underclass Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form will be played Sept. 21-24 at the Camelback Ranch Complex and the Surprise (Ariz.) Stadium Complex (Rangers, Royals).

… … …

SIXTY-FOUR TEAMS FROM 12 STATES
will compete for the title at the 10th annual PG Upperclass Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form, a tournament won last year by Arizona-based Wilson Sandlot. This year’s field includes entrants from the western outposts of Alaska, Montana and Utah, as well as the usual throng of teams from Arizona, California and Colorado.

Based on the rosters that had been submitted early this week, Ontario, Calif.-based CBA Marucci National and CBA Marucci American will be armed to the teeth with top prospects when they arrive in the Arizona desert.

CBA Marucci National features 15 2019s ranked in the top-500 nationally, a number that includes seven that are ranked in the top-256. No. 67 shortstop Carter Young (a Vanderbilt commit), No. 73 first baseman Joseph Naranjo (Cal State Fullerton) and No. 112 shortstop Cody Freeman (Baylor) are among the leaders of this talented upperclass squad.

CBA Marucci American comes in with a roster that features seven 2020 prospects ranked in the top-357 of their class, including No. 107 outfielder Jake Vogel (UCLA).

The Nevada-based Las Vegas Recruits (LVR) enters with a diverse roster that includes No. 125 2019 right-hander Aaron Roberts (California), No. 61 2020 third baseman/right-hander Jaden Agassi (U Southern California), No. 180 2020 catcher Emilio Morales (USC) and No. 39 2021 right-hander Tyler Whitaker (Arizona).

University Place, Wash.-based GBG NW Marucci features talented top 2020s in No. 7 right-hander Mick Abel (Oregon State) and No. 95 right-hander Marquis Grissom Jr.

Other highly ranked prospects rostered for the Upperclass event include No. 18 2020 shortstop Mac Horvath (North Carolina) from the Twin Cities Baseball Academy and No. 8 2021 outfielder Thomas Dilandri (Texas Christian) from the LVR Red.

Sixty-two alumni of the PG Upperclass Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form have already made their major league debuts, a number that includes the Nationals’ Bryce Harper, the Rockies’ Trevor Story, the Padres’ Eric Hosmer and the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger.

Indians’ right-hander Shane Bieber, who is enjoying a terrific rookie season in the big leagues, was at the Underclass Fall National Championship in 2011 and the Upperclass Fall in 2012.

… … …

TWENTY-SIX TEAMS FROM FOUR STATES
– Arizona, California, Colorado and Nevada – will vie for the championship at the 3rd annual PG Freshman Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form. The first Freshman Fall National Championship held in 2016 was won by Nevada-based LVR and last year’s title was claimed by GBG Arizona 2021.

Many of the West’s top travel ball programs will be represented, with teams from California’s CBA, GBG, Dykstra Baseball and San Diego Show, Colorado’s Slammers Baseball and Nevada’s LVR in the tournament field.

The rosters are filled with several of the top class-of-2022 prospects, including No. 28-ranked shortstop Mickey Romero (Arizona) from the Show, No. 37 outfielder Mason Neville from the Nevada Road Dogs, No. 47 shortstop Demitri Diamant and No. 94 third baseman Logan Saloman from Phoenix-based 3D West and No. 100 left-hander Spencer Seid from the CBA Wave.

… … …

AT LEAST 45 TEAMS FROM EIGHT STATES
– the majority from Arizona and California – will get after it at the 10th annual PG Underclass Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form.

Phoenix-based Canyon Thunder 2017 won last year’s Underclass Fall PG national championship. In the previous nine years, only the California-based GBG program has won as many as two titles with seven other prominent programs winning one each.

Official rosters for the expected teams had not been published as of mid-week, so the names of the top prospects that will be on hand were not available as this was written. Readers are encouraged to click here in the coming days for updates involving this event.

It is known that the Los Angeles-based GBG Marucci organization will be well represented with four teams – 2020 Blue, 2020 Navy, 2021 Blue and 2021 Navy – in the field. University Place, Wash.-based GBG NW Marucci will also contend.

Colorado-based Slammers Baseball has four teams in the field – Asnicar, Gonzalez, Howard and Jenkins – and California-based CBA will have three entrants: the Bulldogs, Sacramento 2020 and the Wave. The Southern California Bombers will have a pair of entrants in the 2020 Black and the 2021 Black and the San Diego Show will enter both the Show and the Show Black.

The Crabfest All-Americans get the high mileage award for traveling nearly 2,300 miles from their base of operations in New Carrollton, Md.

More than 300 alumni of the Underclass Fall National Championship went on to be selected in the MLB June Amateur Draft and nine have already made their big-league debuts. That number includes Kolby Allard (Braves), Shane Bieber (Indians), Caleb Frare (White Sox), Isiah Kiner-Falefa (Rangers) and Jacob Nottingham (Brewers), all of who debuted this season.

Roman Keister (2030, Dade City, FL) Could not miss the barrel this weekend tallying 6 hits including 2 triples and 4 RBI. Starts the load early and controls his body well, the up the middle approach really plays in game. Also worked from off the mound for an inning and picked up a punch out.  Colton Russo (2030, Coral Springs, FL) Showed off the power burning outfielders all weekend. 5 hits including two triples that carried over the CF and RF heads. Has a good understanding about using the lower half in the swing and the bat to ball skills really impressed.  Karson Blakney (2030, St. Augustine, FL) Made his impact in a big way this week, collecting the win in the quarterfinals. In his outing he went 5 shutout innings and struck out 5 while only allowing 2 hits. Worked in the mid 70s with the FB and topped out at 78. Also produced on offense driving in 5 RBI on 4 hits. ...

Lennex Minor (‘28 CA) absolutely destroys this offering to the PS for a 2-run shot. 2-4 on the day w/ 4 driven in. Athletic in the box w/ a quick stroke and strength throughout the frame. Also closed out the game running the FB up to 88 in a St. Bernard win #PGHS @PG_Scouting pic.twitter.com/KF7BsKGcm7 — Perfect Game California (@California_PG) March 29, 2026 Lennex Minor, MIF/P, St. Bernard (2028) Minor had a massive day in my look this past Saturday in a game being played at the University of San Diego.  The sophomore had a pair of hits, one which was a no-doubt homer, and drove in four.  Minor’s athleticism jumps out on the field with twitchy actions both at the dish and in the dirt.  He features a 6-foot, 170-pound frame with room to add and generates from a strong lower half and exceptionally quick hands.  Showing two-way potential, he made an...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 1

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
Welcome to another week of Perfect Game Small School baseball — and if you're looking for clarity at the top, you've come to the wrong place. Across all three classifications, the No. 1 spot is very much an open question, and nobody is sleeping comfortably right now. In NCAA Division II, Pittsburg State is stumbling at precisely the wrong moment, leaving the door cracked wide open for hungry challengers to come knocking. In the NAIA, defending national champion LSU Shreveport has dropped four straight and suddenly looks far more vulnerable than a program of their pedigree ever expects to be. And in NCAA Division III, the race for the top ranking is less a competition and more a ten-car pileup of elite programs, none of whom have done enough to pull away — and all of whom have done plenty to deserve it. Three classifications, three vacancies at the top, and a whole lot of...

Midseason Awards  Perfect Game Midseason Player of the Year:  Landon Hairston, OF, Arizona State  The season sophomore outfielder Landon Hairston is putting together is generational, even amongst the Hall of Fame talent Arizona State has fielded over the years.  Hairston, the 5-11/195 sophomore outfielder from Queen City, AZ has his club on track for another postseason appearance and they will make plenty of noise in the Big 12 regular season.  To put things in perspective on Hairston’s season, he is currently 5th in the nation in batting average, 3rd in hits, 8th in hits per game, tied for 2nd in home runs, tied for 5th in runs scored and is 4th in runs batted in so far.  He holds a batting average of .469 while slugging 1.027 and reaching base over half the time with an OBP of .551.  Hairston walks more than he strikes out and has 12 doubles, 17...

College Players of the Week: March 31

March 31st Perfect Game/Co-Players of the Week:  Landon Hairston, OF, Arizona State  The Arizona State Sun Devils (20-8) went (3-2) last week and now sit at No. 18 in our latest Top 25 poll.  They are proving that they are legitimate Big 12 contenders and Landon Hairston is making a strong case for National Player of the Year at the halfway point in the season.  The 5-11/195 sophomore outfielder from Queen City, AZ is putting up such loud numbers that they are almost hard to fathom.  In five games last week, the lefthanded hitter collected 12-hits in 19 Abs, scoring 13 runs on 6 walks, a double, 5 home runs and he drove in 11 runs on his own.  For the season, he has put together a slash line of .468/.991/.553 with 12 doubles, 15 round trippers, 45 RBIs, a 12:18 strikeout-to-walk ratio and he has swiped 8 bags so far.  It has been a special year for the...
