Power discipline shows out to down Elite Squad in 18u Championship

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Power Baseball 2020 came ready to hit and slugged their way to a 12-4 victory over Elite Squad as Power claimed the 18u WWBA Memorial Day East championship. Power jumped to an early 6-1 lead and they wouldn’t relinquish that and claimed the title.

Power had its first five batters reach base, three via walk and two via single, before forcing a pitching change, and it was clear that their bats were clicking early. They added a couple more runs on two bases loaded walks to make it a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first. Elite Squad was able to add a run in the bottom of the first thanks to a walk, two stolen bases, and a sac fly to only have the lead at three heading into the second.

More walks and more plate discipline allowed Power to take advantage of runners on base and collect more runs, with two more scoring in the second. Power was really good at extending at-bats, fouling off tough pitches, and making Elite Squad arms earn outs which were hard to come by; of the 12 runs Power scored in the game, it only needed eight hits to do so.

Logan Wash came out of the pen and really stabilized the pitching, as their previous arm had five walks in a little over two innings. Wash ran his fastball up to 84 mph and missed barrels well, though he allowed two runs, the lead was more than enough to pitch with comfort out there as opposed to intensely stressful situations.

Despite the loss, Elite Squad’s Coby Mayo was named the MVP of the tournament. The Florida commit hit .533 with a long home run, seven RBI, and took a lot of walks resulting in a .667 on-base percentage. Najer Victor was the MV-Pitcher of the event, as he was dynamite during his time on the mound. The UCF commit touched 94 mph on Friday night before tossing five shutout innings in bracket play for a final line of seven innings, a 1.00 ERA, and 13 Ks.


Rebels outrun FTB Tucci for 16u title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In what could be described as a thorough victory, the Florida Rebels downed FTB Tucci Rodriguez by the final score of 16-0 to capture the championship of the 16u WWBA Memorial Day East. The Rebels scored early and often, putting up runs in four of five innings to run the opposition out of the yard.

The Rebels scored right away in the top of the first, coming away with three runs to build an early lead for the pitching staff to hold onto. They loaded the bases with a number of walks, drove one in on a sac fly, before Brad Myers came through with a first pitch, two-run double in order to extend the early lead.

The pitching in the game for the Rebels was superb, and it started with Colin Redding, who started the game and only allowed one hit over three and one-thirds innings. He didn’t have very overpowering stuff but hit his spots, induced weak contact, and allowed his defense to make plays and hold FTB Tucci scoreless.

Myers led the team in RBI on the afternoon with three, as it really was a total effort in offensive production. Leadoff man Ryan Waldschmidt went yard and added two RBI of his own, while three other players also collected two hits.

Aaron Deegan of the Rebels was named MVP for the tournament as he added two hits of his own and hit .615 with seven RBI on the weekend; Deegan was also impressive on the mound, tallying eight innings with an ERA of 0.90 and 11 strikeouts. Michael Marrero was very good for FTB Tucci over the weekend and came away with MV-Pitcher honors. Marrero totaled 7 2/3 innings in two appearances with a 2-0 record, ERA of 0.90, and a 10:1 K:BB ratio.


Elite Squad survives scare for 15u title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a game that seemed destined to end early, Elite Squad 15U National gathered an early lead and held off a late advance in a game that went the distance.

After allowing a seven-run second inning and letting in two more in the fifth, the Florida Burn 2022 Platinum team was down to its final three outs in the 15u East Memorial Day Classic Championship. They proceeded to put up five in the fifth and another in the sixth and seventh before Maison Martinez stranded the bases loaded to secure the title and a 7-0 record on the weekend for the Elite Squad National team.

The top of the Elite Squad order continued to crush the baseball, going a combined 8-for-15 in the championship, pushing the team’s run total on the weekend to a whopping 61 in seven games. MVP Jake Santos led the charge, finishing the weekend 9-for-21, including six singles and three doubles while driving in nine and scoring six times himself. Teammates Spencer Butt, Ryan Cainzos, Blake Cyr, Abdriel Delgado, and Aiden Macks also had two hits in the championship game as the loaded Elite Squad lineup put up 15 hits on their way to the title.

Aiden Macks did it all on the day as he got the start on the mound for the Squad. Macks went four scoreless innings striking out three, before giving way to the bullpen. At the plate he was 2-for-2 with a walk, including a double that drove in two runs in the seven-inning second.

MV-Pitcher of the 15u division, Blake Gollott, was dominant in his lone outing on the weekend, throwing a mercy-shortened five-inning no hitter in Elite Squad’s second game of pool play. Running his fastball up to 83 mph and flashing a good breaking ball, Gollott went on to strike out nine Gamblers hitters while commanding the zone early and often throughout his outing.

This is the second straight year that the Elite Squad National team has won the 15u WWBA East Memorial Day Classic title.


Dunsford’s heroics push FTB to 14u title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A game that only saw a single run scored until the sixth gave quite the thrill to those in attendance on a beautiful Memorial Day afternoon. A passed ball in the top of the ninth scored Anthony Schatz from third and served as the game-winner for Resmondo FTB, as they took down a talented Florida Hurricanes 14u Platinum team 3-2 in extras of the 2019 14u East Memorial Day Classic Championship.

Bryan Rivera got the start for FTB, scattering 14 Hurricanes hits to allow only two runs in his seven innings of work before handing the ball over to Eduardo Balboa in extras. Rivera worked consistently in the zone allowing his defense to work behind him and show why FTB was able to go seven games without a loss on the weekend. Balboa was able to work two scoreless innings in extras to pick up the win for FTB, running his fastball up to 84 mph and picking up his second save of the day.

The MVP of the tournament, TJ Dunsford, would prove huge once again as he drove in teammates Andy Hernandez and Ariel Antigua for what would be the game’s tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning before the Hurricanes would tie the game back up in the bottom half of the inning. Dunsford finished the weekend 10-for-23 with seven singles, three triples, and 12 runs batted in, also scoring eight times himself. Dunsford also put together six strong innings of work on the mound over the weekend allowing only one earned run and striking out seven, including four innings and picking up the win in the semifinal game.

MV-Pitcher Freddy Noel Beruvides Jr. was very good on the weekend, allowing only two runs and striking out eight over a span of eight innings, including six innings in the championship game. Beruvides Jr. also slugged his way to a 5-for-11 performance with six walks on the weekend, driving in five runs in six games.


Hurricanes run away with 13u title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Hurricanes 13u Platinum team would grab the lead early and never look back on their way to an 11-1 win over MVP Miami in the championship game of the 13u WWBA East Memorial Day classic.

This Hurricanes team was unreal over the weekend on their way to a 6-0 record and outscoring their opponents by a score of 85 to 3 across those six games. The Hurricanes actually did not play a single full game as the various mercy rules forced every one to be cut short at some point. They would be held to single digits only once on the weekend, in their 8 to 0 semifinal win, and wouldn’t allow more than a single run in any of their outings.

In the championship game, they would continue that outstanding success on both sides of the ball by scoring five in the first, one in the second, and another five in the third before letting the tournament’s MV-Pitcher Christian Rodriguez finish it off on the mound. Rodriguez was brilliant on the mound and at the plate, throwing five innings of three-hit baseball, running his fastball up to 85 mph, striking out nine and only allowing a single un-earned run to make its way across, while also going 2-for-2 with a walk and scoring three times.

Rodriguez, on the mound, would finish the weekend with six innings pitched, allowing only three hits and no earned runs, striking out nine. As dominant as he was on the mound, it paled in comparison to his performance at the plate, going 10-for-13, including four doubles, four triples, and eight walks, driving in six runs and scoring 16 times himself.

The MVP of the 13u Division, Hurricanes third-baseman Anthony Tralongo, was a monster at the plate throughout, finishing with at least one hit and one run scored in all six of their games. Tralongo finished the weekend an outstanding 10-for-15, including four doubles, a homerun, and four walks, while also driving in 11 and scoring a whopping 13 times himself. This is Tralongo’s second MVP won so far in 2019 Perfect Game tournament circuit with the other coming in the 13u East MLK Championship.

Another week of conference play down and Johnson County continues there tear through the spring of 2026, they retain the top spot with Gaston nipping their heels at number 2 for the third consecutive week. McLennan jumps up to number 3 with a big series sweep over rival Texas powerhouse, Weatherford. Out west, Cochise just keeps rolling in the desert and California looks to be hotly contested all the way down the final stretch. A couple of debut appearances down the board with Harford, CCF, and Linn Benton all earning their spot on our top 25 for the first time in the first week of April. We are past the midpoint of the college baseball season and the stakes are rising by the week. Conference races are tightening, schedules are getting harder, and the résumés that will matter in the selection room are being written right now — one series at a time. This week's most significant development came in Division II, where North Greenville swept Young Harris in three consecutive one-run games to claim the top spot for the first time this season, knocking Tampa from a perch they've held most of the year.
