PGWS Qualifier: Day 1 Scout Notes

Hit Factory Pro had a handful of standouts today starting with Austin Grause (2021 Tampa, Fla.) who is committed to the University of South Florida. He is an accomplished two-way player and showed very well Thursday on the mound. He threw two innings with a fastball that ranged 85-87 mph and touched 88. He has a strong core, full arm circle, quick shoulder and very good extension out front. His breaking ball sat in the 72-75 range with 11-to-5 shape and looks to be a solid second offering as he develops.

His teammate, Cole Russo (2021 Tampa, Fla.), is a middle-of-the-order bat to keep an eye on. The uncommitted Russo has good bat speed and the barrel whips through the zone. He uses his lower half very well and has the ability to use the whole field as he showed today with a hard line drive over the shortstops head for two RBIs.

Hit Factory’s shortstop, Jonathan Vastine (2021 Bartow, Fla.), was very good at the Perfect Game Jr. National a couple weeks back and followed it up with a strong showing Thursday. He had had three quality at-bats and made a great play on the defensive side. He took a great first step on a line drive to the 6-hole that he caught and quickly transferred and threw off one leg to turn a double play. Currently uncommitted, he showed great instincts and enough arm to stay at shortstop in college.

Fulton Lockhart (2022 Lithia, Fla.) has a great frame to build on. Already 6-foot-3 and 175-pounds, he has plenty of room to add strength as he matures and currently shows raw bat speed at the plate. He has overall looseness to his swing and creates good leverage as he impacts the ball. He barreled a well-located fastball for a hard line drive hit to left field to score a run Thursday.

His Ostingers Baseball Academy teammate, Caden Kok (2022 Winter Haven, Fla.), had a nice day on the mound throwing three scoreless innings in relief. The righthander struck out three while not allowing a walk. His fastball was in the 80-82 range and he threw 78 percent of his pitches for strikes during his outing. He is a strongly built athlete for his age with a delivery that he repeats well and has a quick arm from a low three-quarters arm slot.

Owen Flynn (2021 Windermere, Fla.) quickly showed why he is one of the top arms in the class when he took the mound for Power Baseball 2021. He sat in the 84-88 range, touching 89, with a whippy arm that comes at you quickly. He has some twitch to him and will continue to make jumps with added strength that allows him to stay in his legs consistently. He struck out four hitters in his two innings of work. It will be fun to follow his progression over the next two years as the upside is obvious.

Power Baseball has a very good lineup and its easy to like the profiles of Marcus O'Malley (2021 Naples, Fla.) and Sammy Lake (2021 Windermere, Fla.). O’ Malley looks like a true table-setter. He swings lefthanded, controls the zone well, has excellent hand eye coordination and a fast and direct path to the ball. Defensively he showed quick feet from the shortstop position and stayed very balanced on movement plays. His overall package has a lot to like.

Lake has a great body at 6-foot-2, 180-pounds with a high waist and long arms that he uses efficiently during his swing. He has very good bat speed and the barrel is heavy going through the zone. He gets length through contact and the ball comes off extremely hard when squared. He did not expand the zone and was consistent with his all-fields approach. It is easy to project future power with this righthanded hitter.

Johnnie Lopez (2022 Deltona Fla.) stood out defensively today for Action Force Baseball. He has very good lateral movement and showed his range on multiple plays to his backhand side. He has soft hands and a quick transfer that allows him to make all the plays from the shortstop position. At the plate he has a confident approach and feel for the barrel, using his 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame very well. He is uncommitted, but has the ability to make an impact in the middle of the field as he develops.

University of Miami commit Ryan Fry (2022, Tampa, Fla.) threw four innings of shutout baseball for Ostingers Baseball Academy 2022. The righthander, standing at 6-foot-2, struck out seven while not allowing a hit. Fry has a very fluid delivery with a great arm action. His fastball was up to 83 and had a lot of arm-side movement. Fry hides the ball very well throughout his delivery, which helps make his curveball and slider very deceiving. Fry has a very athletic build and displays a lot of confidence on the mound.

Another Ostingers Baseball Academy player that stood out on Thursday was Adrian Arroyo (2022, Tamps, Fla.) Arroyo who went 2-for-3 at the plate, which included a double. Arroyo has a great approach at the plate, taking good pitches and swinging at pitches that he can handle. Arroyo, who is uncommitted, will be looking to continue to drive the ball in the gaps all tournament.

Uncommitted Ian Albaladejo (2020, Lake Mary, Fla.) came out of the bullpen and dominated, throwing four innings with 10 strikeouts and only allowing one hit. This lefty’s fastball was at 84 mph with a lot of life to it and a sharp breaking curveball at 70 mph and he was able to keep hitters off-balanced with the two offerings. Standing on the mound at 6-foot-1, 250 pounds, he works straight down the mound helping him live in the bottom of the zone. Albaladejo missed barrels all day and showed what kind of pitcher he is.

Nate Hannum (2020, Brunswick, Ga.) of 5 Star 16u Terror threw 5 2/3 of no-hit baseball with 12 strikeouts. Hannum, who is uncommitted, was up to 84 mph with his fastball and he was throwing it wherever he wanted to. His fastball has a lot of arm-side run that was able to miss barrels throughout his outing. Hannum also featured a 74 mph wipeout slider which was his out-pitch all day. He was able to throw his slider for strikes while also baiting hitters to swing at it in the dirt. Hannum has a very athletic build and had great presence on the mound. He controlled the pace of the game and opened some eyes.

The leadoff hitter for the 5 Star 16u Terror, Andrew Devlin (Brunswick, Ga.), had a great day as the leadoff hitter. Devlin was 2-for-2 with two RBIand a run scored. Standing in the lefthanded batters box at 5-foot-9, he has a lot of confidence while at the plate and hits to all fields well. Using his great speed, he is able to run down balls very easily in center field.

Ostingers 2021 Reed’s starting pitcher was Brian Boully (2021, Dover, Fla.). With his fastball up to 85 mph, he threw 3 1/3 innings allowing only two hits. His best pitch of the day was his changeup, a pitch that sat at 73-75 mph. Boully was comfortable throwing his changeup in any count and used it with great effect against lefties, as they were swinging over it all day. At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds he uses his strong legs to get down the mound and live low with all of his pitches. This uncommitted righthander is looking to dominate all summer.

2026 Perfect Game Softball Turf Wars January 9-11 Ashley Mears   The 2026 season kicked off in impressive fashion at the Fun City Dome in Burlington, Iowa, featuring a highly competitive field across both age groups. The 18U division was loaded with talent, including over 20 Division I and II commits and several high-upside prospects, leading to intense bracket play and multiple walk-off finishes. Top 100 Collegiate Freshmen As we creep toward opening day here in a month or so, the draft team has put together the Top 100 sophomores on campus this spring.  This list is chalk full of talent, with future draft prospects littered top to bottom. The headliner of this group is Derek Curiel, a draft eligible sophomore that took the SEC by storm last spring. The Perfect Game All-American posted a .990 OPS over the course of a full season and is projected to vault himself further up the board during his ‘26 campaign. An electric arm in Dax Whitney follows up Curiel, with Strosnider, Lawson and Franco rounding out the top five.  Keep tabs on the draft eligible sophomores in this group come the summer. As we creep toward opening day here in a month or so, the draft team has put together the Top 100 freshmen on campus this spring.  Three high-end arms lead the way, starting with Jack Bauer. The Mississippi State left-hander reached triple digits as a prep and is sure to make an immediate impact this spring. UCLA right-hander Angel Cervantes was selected in the 2nd round of last year’s draft but held firm on his commitment and should be an impact arm for the Bruins. Following the arms, a collection of bats rounds out the Top 10. There is loads of upside to the group with the potential and they should draw considerable playing time as freshman.  As the list gets deeper, there are plenty of players that should pop up and make significant contributions both this year and years down the line. With an interesting and action-packed fall behind us, a new college season is just around the corner. The college game continues to prove it is alive and well as the Division 1 team count has now ballooned to 308 teams for the 2026 season. With new legislation allowing teams 5-weeks to prepare for opening day, many student athletes have returned to campus and will begin skill related workouts soon.
