14u Super25: Day 1-2 Scout Notes

Action has been fast and furious in early pool play games at the 2019 PG Super25 14u National Championship in Sanford, Florida. A few clubs have already separated themselves from the pack as they position for a run at the playoffs and the ultimate prize of a PG Super25 National Championship.

The Florida Hurricanes 14u Platinum club has been almost flawless in posting a 3-0 record in the first two days of competition. They have allowed only two runs, while scoring 28. Andrew Ildefonso (2023, Miami Lakes, Fla.) was sterling on the hill in the Hurricanes first game victory allowing no hits and only one walk over four innings. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound righty pitched with plus pace and rhythm and highly repeatable mechanics. He threw his well commanded 77-79 mph fastball to both sides of the plate and complemented his heater with a sound 12-to-6 breaking curveball. He can also swing the bat as he has picked up knocks in all three victories for the Hurricanes.

Jake Kulikowski (2023, Trinity, Fla.) is a hitting machine for the Hurricanes. The six-foot, 185-pound lefthanded swinger shows excellent plate discipline and has a powerful swing that allows him to drive the ball to both gaps with authority. He highlighted his impressive start with multiple hits in each game. His 3-for-4 outing in game one included a long home run that cleared the fence at Boombah by quite a distance.

The Canes NC 14u-Gallaher team out of Raleigh, N.C. has also been outstanding in posting a perfect 3-0 start in the first two days of competition. To highlight only a few of their players is tough, as many of the Canes have been truly outstanding.

Colby Wallace (2023, Biscoe, N.C.) turned in a flawless outing on the hill in the Canes game two win over a gritty Club 42 LA team. He allowed no runs and no hits over his five full innings pitching mostly off his lively 79-82 mph fastball that he threw to both sides of the plate and to all four quadrants.  He complemented his advanced fastball with a sharp breaking 70-71 mph curveball that showed quality depth at the plate.

The Canes-Gallaher club is led offensively by their dynamic leadoff hitter, Mason Chapman Mays (2023, Taylorsville, N.C.). Mays is a very disciplined righthanded hitter who works counts and seemingly always gets his barrel to the ball. He is an advanced runner who puts pressure on the defense and can and will take the extra base.

Following Mays in the Canes lineup is one of the tournament’s early hitting standouts, Drew Lanphere (2022, Wendell, N.C.), a gap-to-gap lefthanded swinging slugger. The 5-foot-8, 150-pound bundle of energy can drive the ball to both gaps and then use his advanced speed to stretch routine hits into extra bases. His early tournament showing includes back-to-back triples to each gap in the Canes game three 8-0 victory over Team Beast.

Jack Renaud (2023, West Creek, N.J.) paced the Canes to victory in their only game on Saturday. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound righthander was a picture of confidence and poise over four solid innings as the Canes posted an 8-0 win. His 75-79 mph fastball showed outstanding arm-side run and heavy sink at the plate. His command of his heater allowed him to work fast and get early swings. He also showed a sound sweeping breaking ball that was clocked in the low-70s throughout his outing.

One of the most fundamentally sound clubs in Sanford hails out of the Bronx, N.Y. The Bronx Bombers have played outstandingly well in all areas of the game in posting a spotless 3-0 record. Like a few of the clubs who have gone undefeated thus far, it is truly tough to single out just a few players, as all who have played for the Bombers have made contributions. The Bombers are a team in the truest sense. A few players have been consistent over the course of the Bombers first three games and deserve to be recognized.

Augusto Del Carmen (2022, Bronx, N.Y.) has been hitting the ball all over the lot for the Bombers and in many cases has been the catalyst for their offense. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound athletically built righthanded hitter attacks each pitch with purpose. His flat bat path and ability to consistently be on time with his swing allows him to hit the ball with authority to all fields. Like many of the Bomber players, when Del Carmen gets on base he is a basestealing threat and a very heady runner.

Jayden Asencio (2022, Central Islip, N.Y.) is one of the Bombers talented catchers. The lefthanded swinger is a line drive hitter who hunts fastballs and doesn’t miss them. He is also an advanced receiver with soft hands and a strong arm highlighted by a quick trigger.

James Garcia (2022, New York, N.Y.) turned in, quite possibly, the best pitching performance to date in the Bombers shutout victory over a very game Florida Dodgers Scout Team 2023. All the 5-foot-7, 132-pound Garcia did was throw 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball in picking up the complete game victory for his club. He commanded the zone from the first pitch to the last. His fastball was thrown with tremendous command and control and was consistently clocked in the 74-77 mph range and touched 79 mph when he needed a little extra. His sharp, 12-to-6 breaking curveball was a knee-buckler that he threw in any count with confidence. Lastly, Garcia also flashed a very commendable changeup in completing his advanced three-pitch arsenal.

The Dodgers PR is an energetic group that has posted a 2-0-1 record in the first two days. Joaniel Santos (2022, Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) has hit safely, and with authority, in all three Dodger games. The 6-foot, 176-pound righthander has also shown promise on the mound in featuring a well-commanded fastball in the 78-80 mph range, complemented by a sweeping 64 mph curveball that shows some bite at the dish.

PG veteran Nazier Mule (2022, Patterson, N.J.) was his usual self as he paced the NJ Axemen in early action. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound righty allowed only two hits over 3 2/3 innings while striking out six. His fastball was electric and was clocked between 88-94 mph. His 77 mph breaking ball was almost unfair and was thrown to all hitters in any count.

The USA Prime North club features a number of solid players and are led offensively by Michael Cook (2023, Mansfield, Texas). The sturdy, 6-foot-3, 191-pound Texan can swing the stick and has powered numerous balls to the deepest parts of the three different fields USA Prime has played on.

Zaid Diaz (2023, Miramar, Fla.) and Andy Hernandez (2023, Hialeah, Fla.) have paced the Resmondo FTB club as they have posted a perfect 2-0 record through two days of competition. Diaz is a swing swinging lefthander who posted two doubles in leading the FTB offense in their first victory. Hernandez was outstanding in pitching the Resmondo to a game two win. The 5-foot-6 righthander has surprising power in each delivery as his fastball was consistently clocked in the 81-84 mph range with plus arm-side run and sink. He complemented his well-commanded and lively fastball with a sharp-breaking 78 mph power breaking ball.

University of Virginia commit and Grit Black righthanded pitcher Kevin Jaxel (2022, Congers, N.Y.) was sterling in his brief outing on Thursday. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Jaxel struck out five and allowed only two hits over his short three inning appearance. His plus fastball was consistently clocked in the 87-88 mph range.

Kade Anderson (2023, Madisonville, La.) was truly impressive in leading his Louisiana Knights club to a 2-1 victory over Grit Black in early pool play action. The 6-foot, 160-pound LSU commit pounded the zone for five solid innings. The lefty allowed only two hits while striking out six during his outing. Anderson worked quickly and efficiently in posting the victory.

Kangaroo Court Roos National is another club that has raced out to a perfect 3-0 record and a showdown between the Roos and the Canes NC 14u-Gallaher is set Sunday morning. The winner will control Pool G and have the inside track to the playoffs. Pacing the Roos through three games has been Caiden O'Brien (2022, Pinellas Park, Fla.). The 5-foot-7, 140-pound athletically gifted O’Brien has hit safely in all three games in leading the Roos offense. He also threw three highly effective innings in the Roos second victory.
