Kernels Foundation Championship: Daily Leaders

The Morris Baseball Chiefs 2021 got excellent pool play performances from a pair of hitters at the top of the lineup. Jerry Edwards (2021, Saint John, Ind.) had a strong night on Friday night, going 2-for-3 with a double in the leadoff spot. Edwards has an athletic frame with room to fill out at 5-foot-11, 160-pounds, and showed excellent bat-to-ball skills to go along with impressive speed out of the box. Edwards recorded a 4.2-second home-to-first time on Friday night and also shows a quick first step in the outfield while covering ground to make a sliding play.

In the three-hole Ty Gill (2021, Valparaiso, Ind.) has put a number of impressive swings on the baseball through two games. After being held hitless and narrowly missing a home run in the opening game Friday night, Gill finally got into the hit column with a long home run on Saturday morning. A Purdue commit, Gill has a fluid swing from the left side of the plate, and also displays some ultra-athletic action up the middle on defense. The primary shortstop showed the ability to make accurate throws across the diamond both on the run and from multiple slots, and he does a good as the captain of the infield.

Joey Hurth (2020, Hopkins, Minn.) got the start on Friday night for MASH Baseball, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters over 3 2/3 innings of work. Hurth has an athletic frame with present strength in the lower half and showcased a clean arm path from a high three-quarters slot as well. Hurth attacked hitters with the fastball at 84-86 mph, topping at 87. Hurth shows feel to spin a curveball with 11-to-5 shape and late depth when on time in the low-70s, and that combination was excellent at times. Though command was an issue on Friday night, Hurth shows some things to like as an uncommitted member of the 2020 class.

Iowa Hawkeyes commit Ryan Reyerson (2021, Marshalltown, Iowa) got the start for the Iowa Sticks Prospects on Friday night showing why he is one of the more high-level arms in Iowa’s 2021 class. Reyerson showed good command of a low-80s fastball on Friday night, topping at 86 mph. Reyerson has a tall and slender frame with plenty of room to fill out and add strength, and mixes speeds well with a curveball in the low-70s. Reyerson shows good command of the fastball to both edges and recorded an eye-popping 11 strikeouts in his 4 1/3 innings of work.

Evan Borst (2021, Prole, Iowa) connected for a pair of hits for the Iowa Sticks Prospects on Friday night, highlighted by a line drive double into the left field corner in his third at-bat. Borst did well to get his hands extended, showing some present bat speed and pull-side power. A Top 500 player in the 2021 class, Borst. Has an athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 170-pounds and shows good speed around the bases as well.

Joel Sarver (2020, Champaign, Ill.) got the start for Top Tier Americans on Saturday morning, striking out seven and allowing just four hits over six strong innings of work. Sarver has a long and slender frame from the right side, attacking the knees well and locating the fastball to both edges at 82-85 mph. Sarver, who is currently an uncommitted member of the 2020 class, mixes speeds well and shows feel to land a curveball with 11-to-5 shape at 72-74 mph for strikes. The arm action is loose and easy, leading observers to believe there is more velocity coming down the road.

Louisville commit Riley Phillips (2020, Godfrey, Ill.) tossed four strong innings for the St. Louis Pirates Baseball Development on Saturday morning, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters. Phillips has a physical frame from the left side and does a good job of getting down the mound with good linear direction in the lower half. Phillips attacked hitters with the fastball at 83-86 mph and flashed feel to spin a curveball with 11-to-5 shape and late depth in the mid-70s. Adding to the arsenal was a late-fading changeup at 76 mph, and that three-pitch mix was enough to keep hitters off-balance throughout the outing.

Jacob Kampf (2020, Lockport, Ill.) was lights out over four innings for the Cangelosi Sparks 2020 Black on Saturday, allowing just two hits and striking out nine 18u Select batters to record the win. Kampf pitched at 83-86 mph with the fastball on Saturday, topping at 87 mph and locating well to both halves of the plate. Kampf has an athletic frame, delivering with clean mechanics from an over-the-top slot. Kampf repeats his mechanics well, allowing him to consistently land a mid-70s breaking ball in the zone for strikes. An uncommitted member of the 2020 class, Kampf is a name to follow as the fall continues to press on.

Just a year younger than Kampf, Kyle Walter (2021, Shorewood, Ill.) turned in an excellent outing for the Cangelosi Sparks 2021 Black over on the field next door. Walter struck out five and allowed just four hits on Saturday, challenging hitters with a fastball that has steep downhill plane and some late arm-side life at 83-86 mph. Walter has a clean arm path from a high three-quarters slot, showing the ability to work the fastball at the knees with consistency. Walter shows feel to spin a tight breaking ball with sweeping shape at 74-76 mph, and the mix of speeds helped to get quick and efficient outs.

Just a couple months removed from turning in an impressive outing at Prospect Meadows this summer, Robert Hogan (2020, North Oaks, Minn.) was dominant again for the 2020 Mariners Midwest Scout Team on Saturday. Hogan has a lively fastball at 87-89 mph, and the Top 500 player in the 2020 class also continues to show feel for an extremely impressive breaking ball. Hogan throws a tight 12-to-6 curveball with sharp depth at 81 mph, a pitch that gives hitters fits and flashes plus at times. With an athletic frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds, Hogan has aggressive mechanics down the mound, creating excellent linear direction and showing a lot of fast-twitch movements to like. An uncommitted member of the 2020 class, expect Hogan to make a splash on the recruiting trail as the fall continues.

Will Tenuta (2020, Orland Park, Ill.) was dominant for the Cangelosi Sparks 2020 Black team on Saturday, allowing no hits and striking out five over four innings of work. Tenuta, who is a Purdue commit, is an athletic righthanded pitcher that repeats his delivery well. With a short and compact arm stroke, Tenuta hides the ball well and throws a heavy fastball that gets on hitters quick at 85-87 mph. Tenuta was able to work almost exclusively off the fastball on Saturday, flashing feel to spin a breaking ball at 74 mph in the third inning. A Top 500 player in the 2020 class, Tenuta has the makings of a high-level arm at the next level.

Michael Seegers (2020, Oconomowoc, Wis.) continues to impress at the top of the order, having a 1-for-3 day for Hitters 2020 on Saturday. Seegers’ day was highlighted by a three-run double in his third at-bat of the day. Seegers, who is commmited to Iowa, has a 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame that has plenty of room to fill out and add strength. A primary shortstop, Seegers has clean actions and a sure glove up the middle as well.

Tyler Fullman (2021, Homewood, Ill.) was another bright spot in what has been an exciting Chicago Scouts Association team this weekend, and the power righthander did not disappoint in his relief outing on Saturday. Fullman, who is a Michigan commit, ran a heavy fastball with late arm-side life up to 88 mph on Saturday, flashing feel to spin a tight breaking ball with sweeping action at 76 mph. With a 6-foot, 201-pound frame, Fullman has the build and present lower half strength to continue climbing the velocity ladder over the next year. The combination of size and strength makes him can’t miss prospect to follow through the rest of his prep career.

Late in the afternoon on Saturday, Isaiah Coupet (2020, Flossmoor, Ill.) put together one of the more electric pitching performances of the pool play round. An Ohio State commit, Coupet attacked hitters with an extremely impressive three-pitch mix. Coupet generates some good natural run to the arm side with a mid three-quarters slot, pitching at 84-88 mph and flashing feel to land a curveball with 11-to-5 shape in the strike zone in the low-70s. Coupet used this combination plenty, but also showed good feel to mix in a sinking changeup at 79 mph as well. The southpaw was big for Lou Collier/DB A’s on Saturday, allowing just four hits and striking out an outstanding 15 batters.

In the nightcap, Nick Kolze (2022, Romeoville, Ill.) continued to show why he is one of the more exciting arms to follow in the 2022 class, turning in a quality performance for Rhino Baseball. Kolze used his young and athletic frame to run the fastball up to 86 mph on Saturday, generating the same natural cut that has been seen in past events. Kolze, who is currently uncommitted and ranked as the No. 233 player in the 2022 class, shows feel to land a mid-70s curveball with 11-to-5 shape in the strike zone at times, and development of that pitch as well as the late-cutting changeup will be keys to future success.

Antoine Harris (2021, Chicago, Ill.), an uncommitted 2021, had a loud start to the tournament on Friday and Saturday. The athletic outfielder showed impressive range in the outfield making numerous running catches. At the plate Harris showed present bat speed with the ability to drive the ball to and through the gaps when on time and squared. Harris continued to show the athleticism with two stolen bases on Friday as well.

Midwest Top Prospect Games participant Eddie King Jr. (2021, Lynwood, Ill.) had his present power was on display Friday showing a naturally elevated barrel plane with loud bat speed working through the zone with a home run blasted to straight center field. The Louisville commit was impressive on the other side of the ball as well making multiple impressive plays in the outfield.

Another participant of the Midwest Top Prospect Games, Kevin Coe (2020, Chicago Ill.) enjoyed a big day Friday at the plate. The athletic middle infielder showed good bat speed and bat-to-ball skills on a loud double into the right-center field gap. The Eastern Kentucky commit was also able to drive in five runs on the way to a 13-0 win on Friday night.



2019 Perfect Game All-American George Klassen (2020, Port Washington, Wis.) didn’t have the best control on Saturday due to the rainy conditions but was still overly impressive on the mound. Klassen worked three innings while allowing zero hits and striking out five batters. The Minnesota commit sat 91-93 mph throughout the outing throwing the fastball by hitters consistently when in the zone. George also showed a sharp breaking ball with good depth creating a lot of empty swings up to 80 mph.

Tj Manteuful (2020, Franksville, Wis.) came up with a clutch triple late in the game to get the win for Hitters 2020. The Bradley commit showed good barrel control with present bat speed in creating consistent jump off the barrel to and through the gaps when on time and squared. Manteuful has been impressive throughout the summer adding this weekend to another long list of successful accomplishments.

Aaron Smith (2022, St. Francis. Minn.) started the weekend off win an impressive outing for MN Icemen 18u. Smith features a quiet, athletic delivery with a shorter stride to the plate. Smith showed impressive arm speed from a mid three-quarters slot as the 2022 grad worked five innings while only allowing four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Smith features a fastball with late arm-side run up to 84 mph complemented with a sharp curveball at 67 mph.

The calendar is just days away from being flipped over to 2026, and while the players may be on break, it’s clear that they are just itching to get back on the field and compete once again, with another season of college baseball right around the corner. All-Star Game Continues To Thrive We’re only a couple of years into having the PG All-Star Game around, an underclass event attached to the All-American weekend, this year played in Petco two days before the Classic. The talent that is a part of it continues to grow to significant levels, and this year was a mix of young guys and some newer names that left lasting impressions.
