From a statistical standpoint, the start of the day might have come from McClain Ray (2022, Belden, MS) as the Mississippi State commit tossed a no-hitter during the first slot of the day over on the A quad. Ray was excellent, mixing his pitches successfully and coming right at hitters with a lively fastball that worked mostly in the 86-90 mph range. He’s got excellent size on the mound at a listed 6-4, 195 pound build with a smooth, athletic delivery to go along with above average arm speed as he fires from a three-quarters arm slot. Ray sinks the ball well and generates a good amount of life upon release as he lived in the bottom of the strike zone to induce weak contact effectively. Obviously there was a ton of weak contact as Ray really didn’t make for comfortable at-bats with the opposition; the command wasn’t pinpoint as there were five walks but the stuff itself is very hard to pick up. Ray has the makings of a true swing-and-miss breaking ball with a slider in the upper 70's that shows good biting action along with a changeup that has the makings of a quality pitch. Ray has the complete repertoire to project upon moving forward as, from a stuff perspective, he had as good of a mix as anyone on Sunday.
