Coastal Fall Elite Champ. Scout Notes: Day 1 & 2

The Diamond Deacons got off to a hot start in the 2020 PG Underclass Coastal Fall Elite Championship. Getting run production from up and down the order.

Harrison Lewis (2023 Winston Salem, N.C.) contributed to the twelve run out bust with finding the barrel on multiple occasions while driving in three runs and coming around to score another of his own. His right-handed swing shows a simple approach with a direct path to the ball as he does a nice job shifting his weight into contact and using his lower half to produce power from the ground up. His 6-foot-5, 220 pound frame shows some strength already but has room to fill out as he continues to mature.

Continuing the theme of big days at the plate for the Diamond Deacons was second baseman Kaden Fuller (2023 King, N.C.). Fuller finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. His right-handed swing showed good feel for the barrel as he sprayed the ball up the middle and down the right field line for his hits. His barrel path works smooth through the zone with slight loft allowing him to create some back spin on the ball.

Left fielder Bryson Bennett (2023 Westfield, N.C.) added two more knocks of his own as he showed a fluid hand path to the inside part of the ball with good extension out front. Bennett’s two hits helped drive in three runs as he collected a well struck single up the middle and a loud double to left center field that he would later come around to score on. His lean athletic frame shows room to fill moving forward with the potential for added strength as he continues to mature.

Sam Lawson (2023 Raleigh, N.C.) put together a solid outing for Team Elite American 16U as he went four and one-third innings allowing two runs on his club’s way to a 7-2 victory. Lawson ran his fastball up to 81 mph as he worked it around the edges of the zone from a high three-quarters arm slot with an abbreviated arm action. Once up in the count he would look to use his curveball to put away hitters as it showed real swing and miss type depth in the upper-60s. He created some deception with the breaking ball as he did a nice job tunneling it from his high three-quarters arm slot.

Gavin Johnson (2023 Youngsville, N.C.) showed well in his first game of the tournament. All though the lead-off man for Team Elite American 16U didn’t collect a hit he put together some good at bats working the count and showing a real smooth swing form the left side. His bat to ball skills and smooth bat path allow him to create some leverage at the point of contact as he works up the middle of the field with some loud outs. He also manned centerfield defensively, showing good reads with his first step and closing on the ball quickly.

Sam Schaeffer (2023 Chapel Hill, N.C.) showcased some serious pop from the right side of the plate. The physical first baseman showed present strength in his swing on multiple occasions just missing a home run foul in his first at bat down the left field line. He followed that up with a well struck ball to center field in his next at bat and a ball driven deep to left field in his third at bat. Although he came away hitless, he put together one of the loudest days at the plate of the tournament so far.

Karson Knox (2023 Wake Forest, N.C.) put together a solid day on both sides of the ball as the Team Elite American 16U catcher finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored. At the plate he displayed a simple approach as he matched the plane of the pitch well with the barrel working through the zone for an extended period of time. Behind the plate he showed soft hands with the ability to use his athleticism to work around the ball and center it up as he received it. He added a caught stealing later in the game as he showed off his quick feet and strong arm to cut down the runner.

Camden Wimbish (2023 Locust, N.C.) had a solid showing a few weeks back at the Underclass All American Games in Atlanta where he was named to the 2020 PG 2023 All American Games Top Prospect List for his performance behind the plate and with the bat. He followed that up with a dominate relief outing here in Greensboro for his South Charlotte Panthers 2023 club. Wimbish came in the fifth inning of what was a 2-1 game at the time and hung up three huge scoreless innings as he ran his fastball up to 88 mph creating plenty of swings and misses at the top of the zone. This was a slight uptick in his previous top velocity as he showed a quick arm with a well synced delivery.

Chace Chaplin (2023 Apex, N.C.) another South Charlotte Panther who was named to the 2020 PG 2023 All American Games Top Prospect List in Atlanta put on a display of hitting in game one today as he went 3-for-3 with two doubles. Chaplin saw the opposing team try and work him on the outer half and he was able to simplify his swing and hitting the ball where it was pitched with all three of his hits going to right field. His ability to take this approach allowed him to catalyst the Panthers offense and help them advance to the second round with a 4-1 victory.

Cole Lanford (2024 Raleigh, N.C.) a hometown commitment for North Carolina State was as advertised on Saturday night as he displayed a two-pitch mix for strikes in any count. Lanford gave his Team Elite American 2024 five innings of no-hit ball with six strike outs. He sat 80-82 mph with his fastball throwing it to both halves of the plate. Once ahead in the count he showed good feel for a low-70s breaking ball with real swing and miss type depth. Lanford will be an interesting prospect to watch grow into his 6-foot-2 160 pound frame as there is plenty of room to fill in the frame and the ball comes out of his hand clean. Suggesting a big velocity increases to come.

Jaden Knight (2024 Winston Salem, N.C.) showed one of the more polished swings of the tournament this weekend. The 6-foot 166 pound outfielder took at bats on Saturday night that rivaled any in the tournament when it comes to pure fluidity in the bat path while playing against kids up to two years older. His mature approach and feel for the barrel leave a lot to like with this young outfielder who will surely continue to catch eyes with at-bats like the ones he has taken this weekend.

He finished the day with five hits in six at-bats which included four doubles and six runs batted in. His two doubles and four runs batted in played a big part in the Gold Playoffs Round 1 victory over the talented BPA squad out of California. He backed up that performance with three more hits in a quarterfinal’s loss to the East Cobb Astros 14U Orange to finish the tournament with a .600 batting average and 1.636 on-base plus slugging percentage. 2026 MLB Draft Reports: Top 100

PG Draft: Top-100 Reports (April Update) 1. Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA R-R, 6-2/202, Chandler, AZ Previously Drafted: Never Drafted Roch Cholowsky has consistently ranked at the top of the class throughout the cycle due to the safety and upside of the profile. Defensively, he is a plus defender at shortstop with soft hands, consistent actions, and quality range. Not only should he stick at the position long term, he should excel there at the next level. Offensively, there is a strong mix of hit and power potential from the right side of the plate. The swing is a bit unorthodox with a shorter finish, but Cholowsky consistently finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority to all fields. He has strong bat to ball skills with impact. He has walked more than stuck out during his collegiate career, giving him a high on-base ability. The run tool is the only tool that doesn’t jump...

In a season that has already had many exciting matchups across various events, we as a staff would like to highlight or “Shout-Out” notable performers along with an Uncommitted Spotlight and Team Spotlight.  Uncommitted Spotlight: Mason Rosenberg, 1B, 2027, Bishop Eustace Prep  Uncommitted Mason Rosenberg (2027, NJ) has been an absolute force within the Bishop Eustace lineup, as the left-handed hitting slugger is hitting .481 through eleven games including six homers. The strength has vastly improved, allowing for Rosenberg to impact the baseball with authority to all fields. Couple that with improved speed and athleticism, this uncommitted 2027 can be a welcomed addition to a class looking for offense.  Team Spotlight: Northern Burlington (9-0) Northern Burlington is once again off to a hot start, as the Greyhounds sit at 9-0 thus far and have continued to...

Another week down and Johnson County continues their torrid run to remain at number 1. They're 46-2 on the season with multiple hitters over 25 bombs which is astonishing for the level as the Cavs have announced themselves as title favorites. Just a couple of weeks left heading down the stretch and our field remains mostly the same with the two additions of midwest powerhouse Iowa Western and the Warriors of East Central who will have a tough test Wednesday in Poplarville against fellow Mississippi adversary Pearl River in a mid-week double header.   Rk. Coppy's Corner: April 23 POY Deep Dive

John Coppolella

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.     Player of the Week: Tague Davis – University of Louisville  Between 2016-2022, the University of Louisville produced 14 players taken in the Top 5 Rounds of the MLB Draft, seven of whom were taken in the 1st Round. The Cardinals haven’t produced a Top 5 Rounds pick since 2022, but that will change soon with Davis. Still only 20 years old and not draft-eligible until 2027, Davis continued his assault on college baseball this weekend with a 7-for-12 performance that included 5 HR. On the 2026 season, Davis is hitting .389 AVG / .489 OBP / .911 SLG / 1.392 OPS. That’s a 400+...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 22

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
The final weeks of the college baseball regular season have a way of separating programs that are genuinely postseason-ready from those that have simply been good enough for long enough. Conference tournaments loom, selection committees are paying close attention, and every game on the schedule carries weight that it simply didn't in February. This week's action, combined with the latest Perfect Game Top 25, paints a picture of a college baseball landscape where the top is clearly defined — and where the middle is a genuine battle. What follows is a cross-level look at teams across the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III ranks who find themselves in that uncomfortable space: not safely in, not clearly out, but firmly on the bubble. Some have built compelling résumés that should hold up under scrutiny. Others have excellent records against soft competition...

Another few weeks have wrapped up this high school season as we’re flying through the spring and most southern states are starting playoffs right around the corner. With the end of the regular season, we have another National Top 50 update to bring to you, along with this will be the start of the weekly editions of our National Top 50. We have a change at the top of the rankings as Venice (FL) takes over the top spot after just dominating their competition in the state of Florida this year. Orange Lutheran (CA) drops one spot to No. 2 after dropping a series but still holds firm at No. 2 in the country. Barbe (LA) has continued to dominate and holds onto the No. 3 spot while Tomball (TX) skyrockets in this update to No. 4 in the country, currently holding an incredible 30-0-1 record. The rest of the top-10 is names we’ve become accustomed to see with Aledo (TX) at No. 5, IMG...
