CBU United Punches Ticket to Bracket

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Heading into the 2021 14u BCS National Championship’s final day of pool play, CBU United 2025 knew they had to show up with their A-game. 
 
Despite handily beating the Nova Vipers, 9-1, on Monday afternoon, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. squad’s 0-0 tie against Scorpions 2025 Marucci put them in a precarious situation. If CBU lost their next game, they could miss out on the prestigious BCS playoff, and they had quite the challenge ahead of them. To live to fight another day, CBU had to get through the Gulf Coast Monarchs 14u, the 12th-ranked 14u team in the nation who was a perfect 5-0 on the tournament. However, the fearless CBU didn’t back down from the challenge, fending off the mighty Monarchs for a 9-7 victory and securing their place in the BCS bracket.

CBU head coach Wayne Stofsky was incredibly proud of the way his roster rose to the occasion.
 
“We just beat a really good team,” Stofsky said. “We knew that they were going to hit the ball, but our timely hits won us the game. We’re excited about the win, and we’re ready to go on to elimination.”
 
Of their timely hits, none were more clutch than Mason Denmark’s three-RBI double in the game’s fifth and final inning, retaking the lead for CBU. Denmark proceeded to pick up the win on the mound for his team, emphatically ending the game with a punchout. Denmark said that while nerve-racking for some, the high-intensity situations he found himself in are where he feels most comfortable.
 
“I like pressure a lot,” Denmark said. “I feel like I perform much better under pressure than I do when I’m relaxed, and the pressure helped me perform today.”
 
While both teams feature big-time bats, both squad’s pitching came out of the gates hot. CBU starter Jackson Hoyt struck out three and allowed just one hit through the first two innings, working up to 84 mph on his fastball. On the other end, CBU put two runners aboard in both the first and second inning, yet their offense couldn’t capitalize. 
 
Cal Johnson was determined to turn the tide in the top of the third, as he lined a double down the left field line to lead off the inning. The following two CBU batters failed to take advantage of the runner in scoring position, but with two outs, Braden Rosenthal reignited the CBU rally, driving an RBI double deep into center to plate the first run of the game. CBU didn’t stop there, however, as after Everett Marshall walked, Colin Keirns shot an RBI single up the middle, bringing around Rosenthal. Nolan Payne proceeded to walk, and after Marshall scored on a wild pitch, Carlos Lugo kept the string of two-out hitting going, lining another RBI single up the middle to give CBU a 4-0 lead.



Denmark believes that his team’s ability to string together runs stems from their close relationships as a group.
 
“Our play proves how strong of a bond we really have,” Denmark said. “For only being together for the few months that we have, we’ve really gelled and started to play together as brothers.”
 
The highly-touted Monarchs promptly fought back in the bottom of the inning, as their potent offense quickly loaded the bases with no outs. Konnor VonHagen then scored on a wild pitch, but Hoyt did a solid job limiting the damage, allowing just one more run on a RJ Machado groundout, shrinking their lead to two.
 
While Denmark and Nicholas Deakin hit back-to-back singles in the fourth, CBU went scoreless in the top of the inning, bringing the Monarchs to bat with momentum on their side. The prolific offense quickly took advantage, as Landon Ide reached on an error and Matthew Blanesa poked a double to left. Ide then scored on a wild pitch, and after Grayson Carpenter walked, Jacob Estrada stepped to the plate with an opportunity to tie the game, or better. Estrada came through, slapping an RBI single up the middle to bring home Ide. VonHagen then put the Monarchs on top, putting an RBI single into shallow right field. OB Osceola III added some insurance, plating Vonhagen with an RBI double to give his team a 7-4 lead. By the end of the inning, the Monarchs had flipped position and had a three-run lead of their own.
 
Despite his squad’s new deficit, Stofsky had faith that his team would be able to regain their stolen lead.
 
“There’s a lot of character in our dugout,” Stofsky said. “We have a roster full of competitive kids. Each one of those 14 kids wanted to be a part of that win, so I knew those kids were ready to put the team before themselves.”
 
As the two hour-deadline approached, CBU had a limited amount of time to get back in the game, but they made quick work of doing so. In the top of the fifth, Marshall began the turnover of power, shooting a leadoff double into deep center field. After Payne singled to right, Lugo got the scoring started for CBU, lining an RBI single to left to score Marshall. Carter Derks proceeded to walk, loading the bases for Maxwell Hunt. The second baseman kept the line moving, shooting an RBI single up the middle. With the bases still loaded, Denmark looked to set himself up for a win on the mound and take CBU into bracket play. The high follow in the 2025 class delivered, driving a bases-clearing three-RBI double off the left field wall to give CBU a 9-7 lead. In the biggest of moments, Denmark kept his approach simple.
 
“I wanted to stay short to the ball and go up the middle,” Denmark said. “The ball leaked inside, so I was able to pull the ball and hit a bomb.”
 
With his clutch hitting, Denmark put himself in a position to close out a back-and-forth victory for his squad, and the prospect out of Zephyrhills, Fla. didn’t squander his opportunity. After quickly securing the first two outs, the righty fired an 81 mph fastball for strike three, finishing off the gutsy 9-7 win with a strikeout.

Stofsky sang the praises of his young player for producing when the team needed it most.
 
“Mason is a 14u dude,” Stofsky said. “He wants the ball at the end of the game, and he came through. His hit was the difference in the game, and he’s got a really bright future.”
 
While he is confident that his team will continue to ride their momentum through the playoffs, Stofsky reminded his team not to get too ahead of themselves. As the team heads into bracket play on Wednesday, the head coach wants his squad to take the tournament one game at a time.
 
“The goal obviously is to win tomorrow,” Stofsky said. “I’d like to tell you we’re going to win the championship, but we can’t get there if we don’t win that first game tomorrow morning. We’re focused on that game, and we’ll do whatever it takes to win it.”
