Summer Kicks Off at SE Memorial Day

Photo: Perfect Game
14u Southeast Memorial Day Classic

In what was the best possible way to kick off the summer season at the East Cobb Complex, the 14u bracket at the Southeast Memorial Day Classic treated us to a one-run championship game, ultimately being claimed by Team Elite 14u National over 643 DP Cougars 14u, 4-3.

The two talented squads were tied headed to the seventh and deciding inning, when Team Elite pushed two runs across to make the score 4-2.

Colton Guillot walked to get the rally started, and was followed by a Brock Bradley single. Mason Diamond walked to load the bases, and Alex Gonzalez was the man with the big knock, singling home Guillot and Bradley.

Jack Ryan was terrific on the mound for Team Elite, tossing 5 1/3 innings and striking out seven while allowing two earned runs. Derek Guzman closed things out on the mound for Team Elite, throwing the final 1 2/3 innings.

Guzman was named the MVP of the 14u bracket, as he hit .500 with six runs scored and an additional six driven in. Dawson Vaughn was given MV-Pitcher honors for Team Elite, as he threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings across two outings, striking out 10.

15u Southeast Memorial Day Classic

East Cobb Astros 15u flexed its muscle in the championship game of the 15u division, outhitting 5 Star West 15u Langley 12-1 in the finale and winning by a final score of 11-0.

The score remained much closer than the final for much of the game, as East Cobb broke through with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to inflate its lead.

The outcome was rarely in question, though, with Nolan Bernard on the bump for East Cobb. Bernard tossed all seven innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while collecting eight strikeouts. Bernard was given MV-Pitcher honors for his effort in the title game.

The offense for East Cobb was led in the championship game by Masa Chilcutt, Maddox Monsour, and Mac Bradley, who all had two hits, as well as Caden Marcos and Miles Shore, who both added three RBI.

5 Star's Dalton Redmond was named MVP of the tournament as he hit .529 with six runs scored and 10 RBI.

16u Southeast Memorial Day Classic

The No. 1 seeded Titans/Texas Rangers Scout Team went wire-to-wire in the 16u bracket, taking home a title with a 6-4 win over 5 Star Atlanta 16u King on Monday at the Southeast Memorial Day Classic.

The top of the Titans/Texas Rangers Scout Team order was as pesky as it gets in the championship game. The first five players in the order - Carter Gilliam, Sam Peterson, Jaxon Pate, Caleb Brown, and Brooks McKenna all recorded a hit, while four of the five scored a run, and four also drove in at least one run.

Isaiah Haygood started on the mound for the squad, throwing one inning before handing the ball over to Braxton Wade, who settled things down for the Titans/Texas Rangers Scout Team, managing the next five innings and giving up just one unearned run.

Pate took home MVP honors, as the 2024 prospect hit .600 for the tournament, with six runs scored and eight RBI. Wade was named the MV-Pitcher for his work in the championship game.

17u Southeast Memorial Day Classic

5 Star National 17u Black came roaring back against East Cobb Astros 16u in the championship game of the 17u bracket, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a come-from-behind title, 6-5.

5 Star held a 2-0 lead through four innings, scratching a run across in both the third and fourth innings. But a five-run fifth for East Cobb gave the Astros a 5-2 lead heading into the late innings.

A walk from Riley Jackson and hit-by-pitch from Trenton Lyons put two runners on base for 5 Star in the bottom of the sixth, while a fielder's choice later from Gabriel Simmons scored the team's first run of the inning to bring the score to 5-3. Reid Harvey doubled to score Lyons, and was followed by Connor Crisp, who switched places with Harvey on a double of his own, scoring two more and giving the lead back to 5 Star.

Owen Robinson took it from there on the mound, closing things out for the championship.

Isaiah Drake was named MVP for East Cobb, hitting .545 over the weekend with 12 hits, nine runs scored, seven RBI, and six stolen bags.

Jake Lankie, a Georgia commit and Perfect Game Select Festival alum, was given MV-Pitcher honors for 5 Star. Lankie tossed five hitless innings while striking out seven and not allowing a walk.

18u Southeast Memorial Day Classic

A four-run sixth inning was all the offense 643 DP Cougars 17u Pralgo needed in the championship game of the 18u bracket, taking home the hardware over East Cobb Astros 18u Navy by a 4-0 final score.

Nate Levine, Isaac Griffin, and Zachary Lyles combined for the shutout on the mound for 643. Griffin handled the bulk of the work sandwiched between the Levine and Lyles appearances, throwing 4 1/3 innings and giving up just three hits in that time.

Three straight hits from Bradley Ihm, Kyle Chatham, and Caden Rogers started that crucial sixth inning for 643. Ihm and Chatham singled, and Rogers' double brought them both home to break the scoreless tie. Dawson Stevens added an RBI single after a pitching change, and Jack Fabris scored Stevens on a double of his own.

Andrew Bray was the MVP of the tournament for East Cobb, hitting safely in two-thirds of his at-bats, while scoring and driving in three runs apiece.

643's Jackson Greer was given the MV-Pitcher nod for his five-inning, two-hit performance against 5 Star West 18u Grant, in which he struck out seven and didn't allow a walk.

Roman Keister (2030, Dade City, FL) Could not miss the barrel this weekend tallying 6 hits including 2 triples and 4 RBI. Starts the load early and controls his body well, the up the middle approach really plays in game. Also worked from off the mound for an inning and picked up a punch out.  Colton Russo (2030, Coral Springs, FL) Showed off the power burning outfielders all weekend. 5 hits including two triples that carried over the CF and RF heads. Has a good understanding about using the lower half in the swing and the bat to ball skills really impressed.  Karson Blakney (2030, St. Augustine, FL) Made his impact in a big way this week, collecting the win in the quarterfinals. Welcome to another Perfect Game Mock Draft. This is not your typical mock draft as it features 15 different GMs drafting the first two rounds of the draft. Each member of the mock draft was assigned two teams and as such will be drafting all of the picks in the first two rounds for each responsible team. The actual draft order will be presented below and we will dive into how teams made their selections and how they feel about the players drafted. It is important to note that this is not how we think the draft will play out in almost any capacity. This is simply an exercise 4 months ahead of time with a large portion of the scouting staff and some picks fall under personal favorites, best available, and a multitude of other factors. Chicago White Sox 1:1 Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA | 1:41 Jack Radel, RHP, Notre Dame The White Sox don’t overthink here and select Roch Cholowsky, who has...

Lennex Minor (‘28 CA) absolutely destroys this offering to the PS for a 2-run shot. 2-4 on the day w/ 4 driven in. Athletic in the box w/ a quick stroke and strength throughout the frame. DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 1

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
Welcome to another week of Perfect Game Small School baseball — and if you're looking for clarity at the top, you've come to the wrong place. Across all three classifications, the No. 1 spot is very much an open question, and nobody is sleeping comfortably right now. In NCAA Division II, Pittsburg State is stumbling at precisely the wrong moment, leaving the door cracked wide open for hungry challengers to come knocking. In the NAIA, defending national champion LSU Shreveport has dropped four straight and suddenly looks far more vulnerable than a program of their pedigree ever expects to be. And in NCAA Division III, the race for the top ranking is less a competition and more a ten-car pileup of elite programs, none of whom have done enough to pull away — and all of whom have done plenty to deserve it. Three classifications, three vacancies at the top, and a whole lot of...
