Padres 13u Scout Team Dominates Championship Monday at 13u World Championship

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Padres 13u Scout Team showed up on Championship Monday at the WWBA 13u World Championship and left no doubt as to who the best team in West Palm Beach was this weekend.

After an 11-0 win over Clutch Elite 13u in the semifinal slot, Padres 13u Scout Team jumped all over Blue Jays Scout Team 13u with a six-run second inning, going on to win by an 8-0 final in five innings.

The two-game shutout amongst the pitching staff was handled by Dru Wilson, who tossed the first five innings of the semifinals, Caleb Alexander, who struck out the side to put a bow on the semis, and Angel Gonzalez, who threw a complete game shutout in the championship, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Wilson and Alexander combined to throw a no-hitter in their semifinal gem.

The Padres got hits from seven different players in their lineup in the championship game, with seven-hole hitter Lennex Minor leading the way with a pair of knocks. The top four hitters in the lineup – Alexander, Gonzalez, Wilson, and Brayden Landry – all registered a hit.

It was even more of a hit parade in the semifinal matchup, with 10 hitters collecting at least one knock, Minor again grabbing a pair, joined by Alexander and Jace Duckett in that department. Every player who recorded a hit in the game also scored a run.

The two wins on the day for the Padres really came down to a pair of innings. A nine-run sixth inning in the semifinal game against Clutch Elite put what was a 2-0 lead out of reach, and a six-run second inning in the championship game jumped them out to what proved to be an insurmountable early lead.

Landry, a 2022 13u Select Festival participant hitting in the cleanup spot for the Padres, was named the MVP of the event. The Puyallup, Washington native hit .462 across 18 plate appearances, collecting eight RBI, scoring five runs, and stealing seven bags. His OPS for the event was an impressive 1.171.

The Blue Jays’ Geronimo Fermin was named MV-Pitcher for his efforts. The Orlando, Florida native tossed seven scoreless innings across two outings, striking out 14 and allowing just a pair of base hits.

Crooked Numbers Lead ZT Prospects National To Victory at 14u WWBA World Championship

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – ZT Prospects National put up three runs in each of the first, fourth, and sixth inning in the championship game of the 14u WWBA World Championship, and two more in both the third and seventh inning, to run away with the title by a 13-6 final over Canes National 14u.

The first run of the game came into score on a Zayne Hookala ground ball to shortstop, and a pair of bases loaded walks from Jacob Oropeza and Adrian Rosales moved the lead to 3-0 before Canes National even had a chance to strike back.

Strike back they did, as the Canes hung four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. Gabriel Priest and Griffin Boesen had RBI hits in the frame for the Canes, Priest's a two-RBI double and Boesen's a single to right field. Abrahm Howard drove in another run for the Canes in the second inning and pushed their lead to 5-3.

It was all ZT Prospects after that, though, as they scored 10 runs over the next five innings to grab ahold of the game and ultimately the tournament trophy.

The top five hitters in the ZT lineup – Carter Hadnot, Yogi Colangelo, Noah Everly, Jaeden Estevez, and Hookala – all scored multiple runs in the championship game. ZT's sixth hitter, Bryan Ravelo, scored one run, and added three hits and an RBI. Oropeza and Adrian Rosales, hitting in the seven- and eight-hole, respectively, both had two RBI.

It was truly a full team effort for ZT Prospects National.

Hadnot, the No. 15 overall player in the 2027 class, was named MVP of the event. The 2022 13u Select Festival participant hit .471 over the seven-game stretch with eight walks on top of that, scoring nine runs and stealing six bags.

Jael Castillo, a Duke commit in the 2026 class, was named MV-Pitcher of the event for Canes National 14u. Castillo tossed nine scoreless innings over two appearances, striking out 15 over that time and allowing just five hits.

He’s a pretty dynamic athlete who can do a lot of things well, but the bat is the calling card as he just lives on the barrel and has no problem handling all kinds of pitching. The 2026 class is one of the best in recent memory for the state of California, with 18 players ranking among the top 100 in the Perfect Game national rankings. Three PG All-Americans, IF Trey Ebel, OF Isaiah Hearn and RHP Logan Georges were all edged out of places on the California All-Region Team as a result. And although the 2027 class doesn’t look as deep, it does feature three Top Six players in SS Dylan Seward, LHP Jared Grindlinger and SS Carter Hadnot. PG Draft: Mid-Major Picks to Click

While Power 4 prospects tend to soak up the bulk of the industry buzz, there’s plenty of legitimate talent lurking at the mid-major level. These are competitive programs that are loaded with players who have real tools, physicality, and performance track records that translate beyond their conference. Below are nine mid-major prospects we expect evaluators to be in early and often on this spring. Ethan Norby, LHP, East Carolina (Rank: 155) Norby is an undersized left-hander, but has produced strong numbers over two years at ECU. The left-hander has produced a 3.80 ERA with 182 strikeouts over 149 1/3 innings. While the velocity does not stand out, Norby can still miss bats with the heater. It works in the low-90’s and creeps towards 95 mph at times. Quality extension for his size and high spin allow that offering to get on hitters, resulting in weak contact as well as whiffs....

Georgia has its usual depth of high-level athletes and Perfect Game All-Americans, although three 2027 players did make the All-Region team. There are an unusual number of two-way prospects among the All-Region players, a testament to the big arms that the state has right now. Two Georgia high schools are ranked in the top 10 of the PG Pre-Season High School Top 50 rankings and the Georgia high school ranks are annually among the most competitive in the country. Etowah is the highest ranked team at 5th overall, while Blessed Trinity Catholic checks in at 8th. Parkview is the only other Georgia team in the top 50, holding down the 34th spot. OF-RHP Dexter McCleon Jr will be fixture on the Georgia All-Region team for the next two years but the top ranked prospect in the 2028 class will have to take a back seat to his elders this year. BASEBALL MEETS HOLLYWOOD FOR A GREAT CAUSE There’s no crying in baseball, but there is laughing, and there was lots and lots of it -- for a great cause -- last Saturday night in Hollywood, California. Perfect Game and its Believe in Baseball Foundation assembled a star-studded cast of comics and guests for the inaugural “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction. The event was held at the iconic Laugh Factory, a historic venue that, in baseball terms, would be equivalent to Dodger Stadium or Wrigley Field. Late-night superstar Jay Leno took a turn on stage.
