Walker Continues to Improve Game

Jaxon Walker, the 5-11 180-pound outfielder from Lenoir City, Tennessee, is a versatile player at the plate and in the outfield.

“He’s an artist as far as his craft goes, whether it's at the plate or in the outfield,” Home Plate Chili Dogs 17u coach Nate Headley said.

Starting Sunday, Walker and the Chili Dogs have faced off against several 16u, 17u, and 18u teams in the WWBA 18u National Championship. Top teams and players from around the country have traveled to East Cobb in Marietta, Georgia, to fight for the coveted WWBA title.

On June 17, the Chili Dogs got things rolling in a close 5-3 win over the Indians Showcase. They then took on the Georgia Roadrunners 17u on Monday, clinching a 7-4 victory. Walker attacked at the plate all afternoon, going 3-for-3 with one run batted in. His patience and control allowed him to reach on a single to left and a single to right. He was also able to advance runners with a sac fly to center field.

“His biggest thing is having adjustability,” Headley said. “He's been really good as far as being able to fight off pitches with two strikes. He's just been back on his backside spin a little bit, and we finally got him back to a position where he's got adjustability. He's also a guy that can roll on confidence too. Once he gets going he can be a real spark plug in the lineup.”

Defensively Walker is the No.1-ranked outfielder from the state of Tennessee and continues to be quick and highly alert in the outfield.

“He's obviously a plus runner. He gets really good routes and that's something he works on as far as being a better defender,” Headly said.

Walker’s experience in other highly scouted Perfect Game events, such as the 2022 Jr. National Showcase and the 2020 14u Select Festival, have set him up and prepared him to be one of the top ranked players in the class of 2024.

The 37th overall player, was originally committed to continue his athletic career joining the Georgia Bulldogs in the spring of 2025. But after head coach Scott Stricklin parted ways with the program in May, Walker was faced with a decision to make.

After deliberating with his family, Walker decided to reopen his recruiting process and shortly after announced his commitment to the University of Tennessee.

“When the coaching staff went through the change over there at Georgia, Tennessee was back in the mix. They didn't really get a chance to see [Walker] during COVID and when everything went down at [Georgia] it was kind of a no-brainer for him.”

The Vols, who have a highly decorated SEC program, are set to welcome some big names like Walker, Levi Clark, Anson Seibert, and Luke Billings in the coming years.

“It's going to be fun to watch him play in orange and white,” Headley said. “I coached at UT from 2007 to 2011, so for me it's special as well.”

The Chili Dogs are now set to take on the 5 Star Team Georgia 18u this afternoon and will await bracket play for the WWBA National championship.
