College Top 25: May 20

Vincent Cervino      Craig Cozart
The last week of the regular season was anything but uneventful, with teams making profound statements within their league and improving their status on the national level. Some clubs locked up their postseason hosting opportunities regardless of what happens this week in the conference tournaments. On the other hand, there were plenty of teams that put themselves on the bubble, not only from a hosting standpoint but some from an NCAA Tournament bid stance.

No. 1 Tennessee (46-10) claimed a share of the SEC Championship with their home sweep of South Carolina and will be the top-seed heading into Hoover later this week. Kentucky (39-12) remains No. 2 this week after winning their series against Vanderbilt and claim the 3-seed in the SEC tournament. North Carolina (41-12) moves up to No. 3 this week as they claimed the regular season ACC Title and took a road-series over No. 16 Duke (35-18). No. 4 Oregon State (41-13) went on the road and took a hard-fought series from Pac-12 foe Arizona. Meanwhile, Texas A&M (44-11) moves back into the Top-5 with their sensational series win over No. 7 Arkansas (43-12) who still held on to win the SEC West.

The NC State Wolfpack (32-19) is the biggest mover of the week, jumping all the way to No. 11 this week after they swept No. 17 Wake Forest (36-19). There are only two new entrants this week, starting with No. 23 Louisiana Tech (41-15) has won 8 out of the last 10 games and won CUSA outright. Southern Miss (37-18) is No. 25 this week after winning 9 of their last 10 games and winning their series against Texas State.

In our estimation, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Clemson, Arkansas and Georgia have already secured National Seed status. With a lot riding on this week’s results, Oregon State, UC Santa Barbara, Florida State, NC State, Virginia, Indiana State, and Oklahoma are in contention for the last spot as a National Seed.
