Oregon State faced some uncertainty going into the spring of 2025, as they were set to play an independent schedule for the first time. The Beavers did not blink. They put together an extremely impressive year with nearly 50 wins and yet another trip to Omaha. This year’s team will once again set out to play an independent schedule and they have some challenges of their own. The Beavers lost seven players to the draft, including some pillars in their lineup. Aiva Arquette and Gavin Turley hit a combined 39 home runs last spring, giving the Beavers plenty of fire power to make up. The team also saw Trent Caraway and his 27 extra-base hits leave for LSU in the portal. While the offense will look to regroup, the pitching staff returns the majority of their innings and will be amongst the best staff in the country.

With all that being said, let's dive into the roster.

Rotation Preview

It is very obvious that the strength of the 2026 Oregon State team will be the pitching staff and more specifically the starting rotation. Leading the charge will be the 1-2 punch of Dax Whitney and Ethan Kleinschmit. Whitney showed up on campus as one of most highly touted freshmen in the country after turning down significant draft interest and did not disappoint. The 6-foot-5 right-hander started 17 games, throwing 76 2/3 innings with a 3.40 ERA and an impressive 120 strikeouts. A dynamic four-pitch mix is the reason why Whitney will be one of the first arms off the board come draft time in 2027. The fastball works up to 97 mph with significant ride. The changeup is already a plus offering and Whitney shows above-average feel for both the slider and curveball. Kleinschmit on the other hand did not come to Corvallis with the hype after transferring from junior college, but quickly became one of the top left-handers in the country. Last year, Kleinschmit threw 91 innings with a 3.56 ERA and 113 strikeouts. The fastball is not as overpowering but is effective in the low-90’s. A quality changeup and slider can put hitters in a blender. The pair at the top of the rotation is arguably the best in the country and is sure to win the Beavers a handful of series along.

Joining them in the rotation is likely to be Eric Segura. The right-hander was effective while bouncing between the rotation and bullpen last year. Segura made a jump in velocity last year, leading to a ridiculous 32% whiff rate on the heater.  A quality slider and changeup also have the ability to miss bats. Segura has also added a curveball to be his fourth offering.

Bullpen Preview

Zach Edwards came to campus as a two-way player, but is solely focused on pitching now and is an absolute weapon. The ERA was not eye popping last year, but the stuff is there to be an arm at the back end of the pen. The fastball will creep into the upper-90’s with a dynamic slider and kick change.

Senior AJ Hutcheson will return to the pen and be a reliable arm for the Beavers. The right-hander will mix arm slots and keep hitters off balance. He brings loads of experience with 104 career innings.

Right-hander Wyatt Queen is another arm that could see some starts throughout the year, otherwise will be a prominent arm in the pen. An effective slider consistently fools hitters. Queen has a track record of success. Another arm to keep an eye out for is JUCO transfer Noah Scott. Scott has a quality three-pitch mix that could be effective as a starter, but could also be used in a leverage role in the pen if needed.

A couple of freshmen that could make an impact on the staff will be Mason Pike and Trey Morris. Pike is a two-way player with significant upside on the mound. The young right-hander works in the mid-90’s with the heater. The secondary stuff is still developing with a curveball, slider, and changeup all shown. Morris is a stocky left-hander that is an uncomfortable at-bat for hitters.

Offensive Preview

As mentioned before, the lineup will look a lot different this spring. There are plenty of at-bats to replace with a lot of star power gone. Leading the group is a trio of seniors in Jacob Kreig, Easton Talt, and AJ Singer. Krieg is an uber-physical bat with light-tower power. There are swing and miss issues at times, but the power can change a game at any moment. Talt got a hold of the starting right field job early last year and did not let going of it. The left-handed hitting outfielder is a good athlete with some sneaky power and an ability to draw walks at a high rate (62 walks in 2025). He will be the table setter at the top of the order. Singer could slide over to shortstop this spring and will provide a spark on both sides of the ball. He is an advanced defender and sound hitter with bat to ball skills.

Joining Talt in the outfield will likely be Adam Haight in left field with transfers Nyan Hayes and Eli Gries-Smith battling in center field. Haight is a strong right-handed hitter that can bring some thump to the order. Hayes brings dynamic speed with the ability to impact games with his legs. Gries-Smith is another guy that can run well, but also has some power that he is starting to learn how to tap into.

On the infield, a collection of players could wind up filling various roles. Ethan Porter may take over the starting third base job as a freshman, but Paul Vazquez, Tyler Inge, and Cooper Vance all are potential fits at the hot corner as well. The aforementioned Mason Pike is a guy that is a natural middle infielder, but also could see at-bats as the DH this spring. Behind the plate, Jacob Galloway will bring a veteran presence to the order. The Texas A&M transfer is an undersized left-handed bat with gap to gap ability.

Overall Outlook

The Beavers have been one of the more consistent schools out of the west coast over the past decade and that does not seem to be changing this spring. The club’s roster has had plenty of turnover from their Omaha run last spring, but still has the talent and depth to make yet another deep run. The pitching staff will be the bread and butter to the roster and will keep them in almost every game they play. The offense has obvious upside and could become a legit force if some guys set up and fill crucial roles. Oregon State will have their eyes on the postseason yet again and will be a contender to make it back to Omaha.

The start of another high school season is right around the corner in a handful of states and with that, as always, comes our Preseason High School Top-50. A whopping twenty states are represented in the initial Top-50, a number that is staggering when you look at the amount of depth some of these rosters have across the nation. Leading the group is St. John Bosco (CA), a team that brought home a CIF Southern D1 title in 2025 and bring back a strong group of seniors to look to repeat. Stoneman Douglas (FL) is a name most people should know by now in the high school ranks and comes in as our preseason #2 team, looking to win their sixth straight state championship in Florida. Orange Lutheran (CA) had a good case for preseason #1 but come it an No. 3, bringing a roster with seven seniors ranked inside the top-200 in the country to the table. Four other Florida schools are represented...
