Coppy's Corner: April 16 POY Deep Dive

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.

Player of the Week: Jaquae Stewart – Texas State University

If you squint a little bit, you can see some Josh Naylor or Dominic Smith in Jaquae Stewart, with a stout build like a more powerful version of the teacup from the children’s song. Lately, the Sun Belt Conference has been child’s play for Stewart as he has been on fire showing an improved hit approach and power that tracks more with his 2024 performance at Northwest Florida State College than with his 2025 experience at the University of Texas. It’s tough for any player to jump from a JUCO in Florida to the big stage in Austin, but the resilience that Stewart has shown this season for Texas State is elevating his chance to play at the next level. It’s an underdog story, not unlike the 1991 movie “Necessary Roughness” about the Texas State Armadillos, a fictional account of a team of misfits shaking up college football. Stewart and the real-life Texas State Bobcats are taking a quantum leap forward.

Carry Tool:
Hit. Stewart’s bat is going to carry him and he’s having a nice season with a .306 AVG / .423 OBP / .653 SLG / 1.076 OPS line. Digging deeper into the numbers gets you more excited about Stewart, who has hit well against better velocity with a .400 AVG against FB 93 mph or higher. This jives with his strong performance on Friday nights: .342 AVG / .468 OBP / .737 SLG / 1.205 OPS. There’s some hidden value inside this left-handed bat.

Pitcher of the Week: Logan Reddemann – UCLA

UCLA has been the best college baseball team in 2026, and Reddemann has been its best pitcher. On Friday night, he had his best outing of the season – and career – pitching 8 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and striking out 18 hitters, tying a school record set by Rob Henkel back in the year 2000 (https://conanobrien.fandom.com/wiki/In_The_Year_2000). It’s the culmination of a breakout season for Reddemann, a transfer who pitched for the University of San Diego in 2024-2025, who just continues to get better and better. With a 79 SO/8 BB ratio – second best in college baseball behind Dax Whitney (see below) – Reddemann is forcing his way into 1st round consideration for the 2026 MLB Draft. His stuff is plenty good with 56% usage of a FB that averages 95 and has been up to 98, 18% usage of a hard CH 83-85 that generates 45% miss and 44% chase, 17% usage of a hard SL 87-88, and 9% usage of a hard CB. He can probably scrap the CB – it’s his least effective pitch – and has even been a little bit unlucky in terms of outcomes with a .333 BABIP. There’s a lot of helium here, and for good reason: Reddemann continues to improve, and, with exquisite control and command, fronting the best team in the country, the rest of the season should be a lot of fun.

Carry Tool: Control and Command. Reddemann pitched well in the Cape Cod League last summer with a 25 SO/3 BB ratio over 22.1 IP. That’s continued this year with the 79 SO/8 BB ratio in 53.2 IP. And it’s been even better on the Road, where Reddemann sizzled on Friday night, with a 44 SO/3 BB ratio away from Westwood. MLB teams get excited by pitchers with this type of Control and Command because of the quick ROI and almost immediate impact at the highest level.

Freshman of the Week: Caden Glauber – University of North Carolina

In the Year 2000 (that’s the second reference), Johan Santana was a Rule 5 selection by the Minnesota Twins from the Houston Astros. The Twins carried Santana all season, using him mostly out of the bullpen for that season and in a swing type role, starting and relieving, from 2001-2003. In 2004, Santana became a full-time starter and won the AL Cy Young Award. He won it again in 2006.

North Carolina is kind of doing the same thing with Caden Glauber. He’s already up to 42.0 Innings Pitched in 2026 – as a point of reference, Reddemann has been one of the best starters in college baseball and has only 11.2 more innings pitched than Glauber – in a swing type role where he has made one start for the Tar Heels. Expect Glauber to be a full-time starter in 2027 and beyond with three above average pitches: FB 94-96, a hard SL 81-85, and a late fading hard CH 83-87 that could be his best weapon with late drop. Glauber is 4-0, 1.71 ERA with 42.0 IP, 26 Hits, 20 BB, 51 SO, and only 1 HR allowed for the entire season. One of the youngest players in college baseball (DOB 1-10-08), he will be 20.5 years old for the 2028 MLB Draft and a favorite not only of analytical models but scouts and all baseball personnel.

Carry Tool: Changeup. It’s a weapon. How much of a weapon? How about left-handed hitters are hitting a combined .091 AVG / .241 OBP / .159 SLG / .400 OPS (!) against Glauber this season, with one extra-base hit in 44 at-bats. As he continues to develop and improve his control and command, Glauber could have an upside similar to prime James Shields: a durable and athletic RHS with multiple above average pitches offerings and a killer CH. Watch for Glauber in 2027 and 2028.

National Nuggets (things that caught my eye this week): Last week’s Coppy’s Corner spoke about Arizona State’s Landon Hairston, who continued his assault on college pitching by winning Big 12 Player of the Week after going 9-for-22 with five homers and 14 RBIs on the week … one other note on Hairston, which I somehow missed: he is the son of ex-MLB player Scott Hairston, the nephew of Jerry Hairston Jr., the grandson of Jerry Hairston, and the great-grandson of Sam Hairston – in other words, he is baseball royalty … while I may have brought luck to Landon Hairston this past week, I may have jinxed his main competition to go 1/1 in the 2027 MLB Draft: Dax Whitney … Whitney had arguably the worst start of his career on Friday at home against Cal Poly, lasting only 2 innings and allowing 5 Hits and 2 ER, although he was likely pulled because of a substantial lightning delay and the fact that he is the best pitching prospect in college baseball … despite that tough outing, on the season, Whitney is 5-0, 1.64 ERA with 90 SO/16 BB ratio in 49.1 IP featuring multiple plus and plus-plus offerings … those 90 SO have come over the course of 175 AB, with an equal dominance of both RH (56 SO in 108 AB) and LH (34 SO in 67 AB) hitters … it’s Chase Burns / Paul Skenes quick-to-the-Big-Leagues type stuff and could make a fascinating decision for an organization like the Colorado Rockies …

As the old saying goes, “all good things must come to an end” and that was the case last Tuesday when UCLA (36-3) saw their 27-game win streak come to an end in a shutout loss to UCSB.  However, the No. 1 team in the land still has their 21-game winning streak in Big Ten to protect, as they have started off league play without a single blemish.  The Bruins will remain atop our poll this week and their historical start to the season roll on.  The UNC Tarheels (33-7-1) move up to No. 2 this week after they made their biggest statement of the year by taking the weekend series from now No. 4 Georgia Tech (32-7).  No. 3 Texas (30-8) and No. 5 Georgia (32-9) both went (3-1) on the week and won their SEC series to stay in contention for the regular season title.  Florida State (28-11) had a nice bounce back (4-0) week and re-enter the Top 10 at No. 8 this...

Since I first saw him as a sophomore, Gomez-Gudiño has long been one of my favorite prospects in the state. The backstop features a super physical frame at 6-foot-0, 215-pounds with a thick lower half and strong forearms. Defensively, Gomez-Gudiño has always stood out. He moves well for his size behind the plate and receives with confident hands. The catch-and-throw ability stands out. Gomez-Gudiño looks to be aggressive and will back pick runners often. The glove alone makes...

Another week of undefeated weeks for our top 4 ranked teams. Joining them in the top 5, coming off an undefeated week of their own, is Florence-Darlington, a team we have consistently had as a top 10 team all season long. Cloud County and Midland College continue to put together strong weeks and climb the rankings each week it seems. Jumping into the rankings this week on the strength of a 15-game winning streak is Seminole State (OK). And Linn Benton makes the top 25 for a 2nd consecutive week and looks like the top team in the NWAC this spring. Plenty of high-level matchups at the JUCO level for some of the top teams in the county this next week.  Rk. School Record 1 Johnson County (KS) 42-2 2 Gaston (NC) 43-3 3 McLennan (TX) 34-7 4 Chipola (FL) 37-7 5 Florence-Darlington (SC) 40-8 6 Walters State (TN) 37-10 7 Blinn (TX) 31-11 8 Florida Southwestern (FL) 30-12 9 Southern Nevada...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 15

Nick Herfordt

Welcome to this week's small school baseball rankings, covering NCAA Division II, the NAIA, and NCAA Division III. As the calendar turns toward the final weeks of the regular season, the urgency is real across all three levels — teams are running out of weekends to build their cases, and the extended postseason invitations that every program is chasing don't go to programs that peak in March. The next few weeks of results will carry more weight than anything that happened before spring break, and the postseason committees in all three divisions are watching closely. Every series dropped to a team you should beat, every road sweep you let get away — it all matters now in a way it simply didn't two months ago. What you'll also notice as you read through the breakdowns below is that the numbers are doing more of the heavy lifting in how these rankings are constructed. Run...

College Players of the Week: April 14

Vincent Cervino

April 14th Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Jaquae Stewart, INF/OF, Texas State  The Texas State Bobcats (24-12) are sitting in second place in the ultra-competitive Sun Belt Conference, and they have one of the most explosive offenses in the country.  They average right at 8-runs per game and can slug with the best of them, averaging almost 2-home runs per game as well.  Sitting in the middle of the order, Jaquae Stewart, is putting together a career year and is becoming the focus of opposing teams.  The 5-10/234 junior from Sinton, Tx is your classic lefthanded power hitter and is thriving in his move from Austin to San Marcos.  While it wasn’t the best week for his club, Stewart was sensational, collecting 8 hits in his 19 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, launching 5 home runs and driving in an insane 17 runs.  For the season, he is now slashing...
