From the time the first pitch of the summer was thrown several months ago, amateur baseball players from around the country aspired to end their seasons in Jupiter, Fla., home of the 2011 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship.
Over 555 college commitments are in attendance at the event.
Opening day at the WWBA World Championship didn’t disappoint, as several premier 2012 and ’13 arms were put on display for coaches, scouts and fans alike. Pitchers such as Georgia commit Duane Underwood and Kentucky commit Clinton Hollon impressed observers with their mid-90’s velocity.
With Day One in Jupiter now history, we take an in-depth look at the prospects that made the strongest impressions.
PRBAHS 3, PG DARK GREEN CLIPPERS 2
-- 6-foot-5, 200-pound, right-handed pitcher Timothy McCarthy was consistently 83-86 with his fastball, while also mixing in a 71-73 curveball and 78 mph changeup.
-- 5-foot-10, 200-pound, catcher Wilfredo Rodriguez had an impressive day for PRBAHS at the plate, showing a quick bat on the way to going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
OHIO WARHAWKS 8, CANADA PG GOLD 5
-- 2012 UCLA commit and RHP Stephen Gant struck out five batters in two innings. He was consistently 88-90 with a 76-78 curveball.
-- 2013 San Diego commit, LHP Stephen Gonsalves was consistently 89-91 in the victory. He also threw a curveball in the 75-78 mph range. Additionally, Gonsalves displayed good sink on his fastball.
-- Canada PG Gold’s Mallik Collymore put together an impressive performance in a losing cause. He displayed a short, compact, swing, and went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs.
CANES BASEBALL 3, PALM BEACH SELECT 0
-- 2012 Stetson commit, RHP Josh Thorne, did some nice things for Palm Beach Select in a losing cause. Thorne was consistently 84-87 with his fastball, 80-81 with his changeup and 79-81 with a cutter. Thorne’s crutch was falling behind in the count.
-- 2012 South Carolina commit, RHP Jamie Callahan, was impressive in Canes Baseball’s victory. Callahan was consistently 90-92 with his fastball and displayed a solid 78 curveball.
-- 2012 Virginia commit, LHP David Rosenberger, threw well for Canes Baseball. He was 86-89 with his fastball and displayed a 70-72 curve.
-- Offensively, South Carolina commits Max Schrock and David Houser were key contributors, while the same can be said for ultra talented Liberty commit and outfielder Josh Henderson.
CARDINALS SCOUT TEAM/FTB MIZUNO 8, TRIPLE THREAT BEARCATS 1
-- 2012 Miami commit, OF Albert Almora, put together an impressive day at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
-- 2013 North Carolina commit, 3B Spencer Trayner, went 2-for-4 with a run scored to help lead FTB Mizuno to victory.
-- Uncommitted prospect, 2012 RHP Yency Almonte, was impressive in FTB Mizuno’s dominant victory. Almonte was consistently 88-90 with his fastball, while also throwing a curveball 72-75 mph. Almonte showed a quick arm and attacked hitters.
-- 2012 Florida Gulf Coast commit, RHP Brad Labozzetta, was solid in the victory. The righty showed a large frame and was consistently 88-90 with his fastball. He also was 72-76 with his curveball. His fastball definitely had some life.
-- 2012 Georgia commit, RHP David Gonzalez, showed some impressive stuff in the win. Gonzalez was 90-92 with his fastball, 79-80 with his changeup and 81 with his slider. The only negative for Gonzalez was the fact he got behind in the count at times.
