Perfect Game Dingers and Dinkers 1 Day tournament

Perfect Game Dingers and Dinkers 1 Day tournament

Urbandale, IA

April 2nd, 2023

The first weekend out on the dirt for many as teams start to prepare for their upcoming high school seasons. Several teams finished 4-0 on the day including, Iowa Outlaws- Andrew, Iowa Gold Prospects- Gold and Southern Iowa Savage. The tournament showcased many of the state’s top pitchers and hitters, several committed players, and even more uncommitted players that have a substantial amount of ability to play at the next level. It was a great day for softball.

18U

The top pitching performer went to Madison Oetzmann (Waukee, IA 2023) of the Iowa Bandits. The  Minnesota State Mankato commit, commands several spin pitches and has a fast ball that tops out in the low 60s. Her most lethal pitch is her rise ball that helped her finish her weekend with 21 strikeouts through 10 innings pitched and not a single walk. Oetzmann continues to shine week after week in the circle and will continue to shine at the next level.

Top hitting performer of the weekend was Breanna Nolte (Indianola, IA 2023) of Alliance Select 18u Nolte. Nolte, an Iowa Central Community College commit, packs a lot of power in her small frame. Nolte picked up nine hits on the day including three doubles, a homerun, and seven RBIS. Her teammate Ally Beck (Altoona, IA 2024) a left handed pitcher, came through in the circle tossing a tournament high 22 strike outs through 10 innings pitched. Beck’s fast ball tops out at 58mph, she mixes in her change up well keeping batters off balance and works all corners of the zone.

Another Bandit who had a great weekend was University of Northern Iowa commit Addison Brunner (Des Moines, IA 2023). Brunner is an RBI machine, knocking in a tournament high eight runs. Brunner is a left handed batter, who sees the ball well and makes great contact, resulting in six hits on the weekend. Excited to see what this young lady can do at the next level.

Kiley Kindelspire (Indianola, IA 2025) of Iowa Outlaws- Andrews, is a slap hitter that also hits for power. Her ability to hit the gap, paired with her speed resulted in three doubles and a triple on the weekend. To go along with her hitting, she is also a very smooth infielder who can play middle infield as well as third base when needed. Kindelspire most definitely has the skills and abilities to play at the next level.

Another Iowa Outlaws- Andrew player, Sophia Bauman (Grimes, IA 2025) is also a 2025 to keep on your radar. She is a strong catcher with a big arm and keeps runners honest and does not even hesitate to throw down on pick offs. Her framing ability and willingness to block pitches is also very valuable. To go along with her catching ability, she is an excellent contact hitter, who had 6 hits, including two doubles and four RBIs.

Katie Pilcher (Cedar Rapids, IA 2025) a catcher for Cedar Rapids Xavier, is everything a pitcher would want in a catcher. Her framing ability, vocalness on the field and athleticism as a catcher are only a few of the highlights that stand out about her. Pilcher also got it done this weekend in the box, hitting two home runs, a triple, and a double. Her confidence in the box is another plus to along with her barrel speed. Pilcher would do great at the next level if she chooses.

Aubrey Scieszinski (Adel, IA 2025) of Alliance Select Cox 18u is a promising young pitcher. Scieszinski places her fast ball well and is topping out around 60mph. Her arsenal allows her to work both plains as she is very confident in her curve and her rise ball but it not afraid to sneak in her screwball to keep batters guessing. She mixes her pitches up well which resulted in 15 strikeouts through eight innings pitched while only walking one batter.

Jada Lande (Slater, IA 2026) of Alliance Select Cox 18u also had herself a day at the plate. Lande, a 5’4” right-handed hitter, has quick hands and uses her lower half well. Utilizing her skills paired with her speed, Lande had five hits on the weekend including two doubles, a triple and a homerun.

Don’t sleep on Jaycee Neer (Indianola, IA 2025) of the Southern Iowa Savage. Neer had five hits on the day including a triple and two home runs and totaled five RBIs. Neer is a tough out, consistently putting the ball in play hard. Her strong plate approach and sound mechanics are only going to get better as she matures.

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: Feb. 25

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
A few weeks into the season and the shape of the national picture is starting to emerge (slightly, let’s get too silly about early results). Some preseason favorites are humming exactly as advertised, a few dark horses are pawing at the gate, and a handful of early contenders are discovering that February optimism and March reality are not always the same thing. Across DII, DIII and the NAIA, pitching staffs are setting the tone, offenses are either detonating or recalibrating, and the Top 25 is already beginning to feel less theoretical and more earned.   DII UT Tyler is performing as predicted with a 12-2 start that includes a series win at Angelo State. The Patriots’ offense has not exactly been knocking the cover off the ball, but the pitching staff has been stingy, holding opponents to a .228 batting average.  They have not faced a ranked opponent yet, but...

College Players of the Week: Feb. 24

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
February 24 Perfect Game/Player of the Week: Will Gasparino, OF, UCLA After playing 117 games, launching 27 doubles and 25 home runs in Austin, TX for the University of Texas, Will Gasparino decided it was time to head back to his hometown of Los Angeles, CA. Based on his performance in the first two weeks of the season for the Bruins, he looks very comfortable and ready to push his name up the Draft Board. UCLA (6-1) enters 2026 with incredibly high expectations, jumped to No. 3 in our Top 25 poll with their 3-game sweep of previously ranked TCU and Gasparino provided much of the offensive firepower. For the week, the 6-6/220 outfielder went 7 for 13 good for a .538 BA, with a double, 5 home runs and 13 RBI. That brings his slash line through 7-games to .391/1.304/.548 with a double, a triple, 6 home runs and he has driven in a total of 15 runs. The scary thing is that Gasparino is just...

PG Salutes Chet Brewer, a Youth Baseball Pillar

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PG Salutes Chet Brewer, a Youth Baseball Pillar A few weeks ago, Perfect Game and its Believe in Baseball foundation held a fundraising event in Los Angeles. The “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction brought in thousands of dollars, all of which will go toward providing deserving youngsters an opportunity to play and grow in the game. Chet Brewer was not at the event – the former Negro Leagues star died at age 83 in 1990 – but his spirit was. Big time. “That night was all about Chet,” PG commissioner Dennis Gilbert said. “He was all about giving kids chances to play the game, especially kids from underprivileged backgrounds. “When you’re 15, 16, 17 years old – those years are the basis of your life. Chet helped put a lot of kids on the right path through the game of baseball.” Brewer’s impactful life has...
