2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
Erben is a 5-11, 185 lb senior right handed pitcher from Texas with good present strength. He has a short, compact arm action with good arm speed and a high 3/4's release. Erben has some effort in his delivery and an aggressive, reliever type mentality on the mound. He attacked hitters with a 85-87 mph fastball and had a sharp slider at 74-77 mph. He will vary his release point and arm angle on occasion, although it's not clear whether this is intentional or not. We didn't see a change up. Another thing that really impressed up about Erben was his defensive ability on the left side of the infield. He showed very good arm strength in drills at 86 mph and has quick feet and very good balance in the field. He made several very solid plays at third base during the games. Offensively, Erben's hitting approach is similar to his pitching approach. He has a short, quick swing with some effort that produces good bat speed. Erben drilled a double off the wall in his first at bat to show off his power but tended to pull off the ball trying to repeat for the rest of his at bats. Overall, this is a hard nosed young prospect who plays the game very hard and has lots of college level tools. Finding the best role for Erben will be important for a college coach. He is a very good student.
