2006 National Showcase
Austin Bailey is a 2007 right hand pitcher/switch-hitting 1st baseman from Prattville HS, residing in Prattville, AL. Bailey has a strong, athletic build with wide shoulders on a 6'1" 195 lb. frame that has room to fill out. Bailey had to leave early from the mound due to a blister but was very impressive when he was out there. If he were a position player only, Bailey also would have been ranked in the top players at PG National. He was ranked #35 among PG National Top 85 pitchers and when all the dust settles, either next June or after three years of college, Bailey, if healthy, is going to surpass many of the players ranked ahead of him. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot with a long, clean arm action. His arm is loose and quick. Bailey not only has a good arm but a very easy and fluid delivery. He has a nice over the head wind-up and creates rhythm throughout his delivery. Bailey's fastball sat 88-92 and touched 93, with late life in the zone that comes from good front side extension. His arm really works and he looks like he has plenty more in there. His 74-77 mph curveball had good spin and if he can hold it longer, it has a chance to be a well above average if not a plus pitch. The blister problem would explain not being able to hold the ball longer. He also showed a 80 mph change-up as well. At the plate Bailey showed that he is a legitimate two-way prospect. He can hit. From the left side the ball jumps off his bat. He creates spin at contact, resulting in carry power that will continue to increase as he fills out. There is not a lot of effort for him to produce his good bat speed and power. From the right side Bailey showed good balance and good hands. His power also translates to the right side. In the field, any corner position is good for him, his plus arm will play anywhere. If he goes to college Bailey has is a two-way impact player. As a professional prospect it would seem that right now his brightest future is on the mound. That arm action is quite good.
