LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Aaron Westlake is a 2007 1st baseman from Shasta HS, residing in Redding, CA. He has a mature, physical build with a well developed lower body on his 6'3" 220 lb. frame. Westlake had a great early June leadinig up to PG National and though he only was able to stay for one day, he was ranked #97 among PG National Top 100 position players. He hits from square stance and has good balance during his swing. Once underway, his has good bat speed and maintains it through contact. As a timing hitter, he can look bad on occasion, but make a mistake in his zone and there is a big price to pay. Westlake is very strong and pretty short to the ball and produce a lot of power with that swing. For the most part he showed as a pull hitter and does a nice job of getting the barrel on the ball when he makes conact. Generally, his balls in play are hit hard. One spot in particular he handles very well, down and in, ala many left hand power hitters. His raw power is a plus and he looks to be a quintesstial RBI man... maybe not hitting for tremendous average because he can be pitched to, but on the balls he puts in play he will produce big results. Though he is a big young player, he is quite nimble on his feet around the bag, with soft hands and a strong accurate arm. Westlake made perhaps the defensive play of the '06 PG National when he dove head first into the camera well to make a catch, taking on the camera and winning, while making the out. He has a good motor and is an asset on defense. He ran 4.78 home/1st and posted a 7.65 60 yard time. Westlake is going to be a monster with a metal bat in his hands if he goes the college route, which looks likely. Though he does have plus power potential and does hit from the left side, he plays in a pretty remote location during the spring and just may not get enough views from the pro scouts, while his competition will be discounted.
