2005 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Tyler Thornburg is a 2007 RHP/OF from Riverwood HS in Atlanta, GA, with a 5'11'', 150 lb. frame. He has a slender build with wide shoulders and plenty of room to grow and get stronger. Thornburg has a long arm stroke with a clean, fast arm action coming forward and a 3/4's release point. His arm works well. Thornburg's delivery has some effort in it but it doesn't seem to affect his command or balance. His fastball was 84-85 mph with some running life. Thornburg's breaking ball has a hard and sharp 73 mph curveball that had late biting action. His change up was 74 mph with nice sinking action and deception. Thornburg is a projectable junior with an 85 mph fastball and two very good secondary pitches, which makes him a very good follow as a pitcher. He also showed nice athletic ability as an outfielder. He ran 7.31 in the 60 and showed excellent outfield arm strength with very good carry. Thornburg hits from a open stance and keeps his approach simple and inside the ball. He had three hits in the showcase games and made solid contact to the right side. He's a good looking all around ball player. Thornburg is also a very good student.
