2006 National Showcase
Zach Jones is a 2007 right hand hitting catcher from Jordan HS, residing in Draper, UT. He has a 6'0" 172 lb. frame that is lean and athletically proportioned, with some remaining physical projectability. A talented player who is continually getting better, Jones ranked #59 among the 2006 PG National Top 100 position players. Jones sets up with a square stance and has quiet hands as he awaits the pitch, with body control through his swing, even with an aggressive swing. His hands stay inside the ball well, allowing the barrel to lag behind. Jones generates bat head speed that accelerates through contact, rather than being expended before. The result is that he showed the ability hit the ball hard to all fields. He has still developing power, with bat speed and a hitting approach that suggest a bright future with the bat. Behind the plate Jones is one of the most athletic catchers in the '07 class. He has a quick transfer of ball to hand, making up for average raw arm strength. His throws track low and generally were on the bag. Overall, Jones is a good thrower capable of throwing consistently below 2.0, as a 1.88 toss in the workout suggests Not too many catchers can match Jones' 4.28 home/1st time or his 6.70 60 yard dash. A year ago he looked like a developing D1 prospect but now he is clearly a top level D1 guy and an emerging professional prospect.
