Derek Matta is a 2016 SS/OF with a 6-0 165 lb. frame from San Juan, PR who attends Gabriela Mistral HS. Slender broad shouldered athletic build, has some wiry strength with more to come. 6.89 runner, moves well laterally in the infield on defense, made plays to both sides in the game, throws well on the run but has more of right side arm strength, also played the outfield. Switch hitter, same approach from both sides of the plate and similar bat speed as well, contact approach, keeps his hands in tight and works the middle of the field, has some quickness in his hands, battles well at the plate and fouls off tough pitches, handles off speed well with his short contact approach, could use better separation and extension out front. Plays hard and has an idea how to play.
