Derek Jones is a 2008 OF/P/1B with a 5'11'', 200 lb. frame from Snohomish, WA who attends Snohomish HS. He has a strong, well put together build and is pretty physically mature. Jones physical tools are solid if unspectacular; he's a 6.99 runner who showed better arm strength than his 85 mph drill throwing velocity. His throws had very good carry to them and he got rid of the ball quickly. He should be a solid corner outfielder defensively. Jones bat is his tool, though. He is a polished, confident hitter with very good hitting fundamentals and a calm, quick, compact approach at the plate. Jones has very good bat speed from a short swing. At times he looks like he's hunting middle in pitches and looking to pull the ball, but he showed in games that he could drive the ball hard to the opposite field as well. He was aggressive early in counts and had no problem making adjustments to 90-93 mph velocity fastballs and squaring up on them. You don't have to do much projecting with Jones' bat, he has high level present hitting tools. Jones is also an accomplished left handed pitcher but did not pitch in Cincinnati. He is also a good student.
