Grant Escue -- Escue is a junior left hander from Illinois with an interesting set of tools both as a pitcher and as a position player. He has broad shoulders and a flat chest but better muscled legs and hips, so he can definitely gain some strength in the future. Escue threw a tailing 81 mph fastball from a smooth easy delivery that had some deception to it because of Escue’s sneaky quick arm stroke. Escue also had a sweeping curveball at 67-68 mph that had good depth to it and could become a nice pitch for him. He has some mechanical issues with his lower half that might give him more velocity right away. Grant also showed us a nice bat and good athleticism as a position player at first base. He swings from a wide base with an opposite field approach and had a very high percentage of hard hit balls both in batting practice and in games. When Escue brings the pull loft that he flashed in batting practice into games, he’s going to have really nice power in addition to a high average stroke. He’s an outstanding student as well.
