2004 World Showcase
Desmond is a very impressive athlete who is very close to becoming a premium prospect and a high draft choice. He’s undoubtedly one of the top defensive players in the country. Desmond had the best infield arm strength at the Showcase, registering 91 mph from shortstop and has smooth infield actions. Although he’s tall and angular at 6-2, 185, he moves well at shortstop and ran 6.79 in the 60. We’ve seen him play all 4 infield positions and even right field during the last 6 months and he’s excellent at all of them. It would be tempting to project him at third base because of his highly projectable frame, but he might just be able to stay at shortstop because of that rifle arm. Desmond’s bat is what will define him as a draft prospect over the next 6 months. He had an excellent batting practice in Fort Myers, showing above average bat speed and good hand quickness. His game approach tends to be longer to the ball and he hasn’t shown the kind of extension that most great power hitters have. Still he projects to hit with power down the road. Ian is a solid student who has signed to attend South Florida. Scouts need to get a real good look at him this spring. He has Big League potential.
