Curran is a Junior Left-hander with a fast arm and 2 potentially dangerous off-speed pitches. He has a solid 6 foot frame and a strong delivery, dominated by his upper body. He throws from a low three quarter arm slot with a very fast arm and shows only a medium effort in his delivery. He was throwing his fastball consistently in the 74-77 mph range and it looked even faster from behind home plate with the speed of his arm and the way the ball came from behind his body. It appears that he has much more velocity in him. He had good control of his 4 seam fastball, but we know he can create ball movement with a 2 seamer, because we saw a good tail on his throw from the outfield to home plate. He just used it sparingly in his bullpen. His curveball is a good second pitch that he was throwing from 67-70 mph including one real good breaker with a late and sharp bite on it, so we know he has a good one. His change-up is another good pitch, with a good looking arm action and location. He showed that he can throw the change-up with a fastball look and it might be the best of all three pitches eventually. We think Jake can develop more flexibility in his torso and a slightly later hip rotation for generating more power. With his front shoulder and hips closed longer he could be throwing in the mid 80's and possibly better before long. He showed a tendency to throw across his body periodically. He looked much better when he would stride more towards the plate. In batting practice he swung a fast bat and really let it loose showing that there is quite a bit of strength in his body but we like him as a pitcher and he should catch most of his attention there. This lefty could have a very bright future.
