Velleggia is an extra big 6-6, 225 lb catcher from Maryland. He ran the 60 in 7.81 and threw 71 mph during drills with a best pop time of 2.05. Velleggia has soft, strong hands behind the plate but will have to work on his quickness laterally to stay behind the plate as the game speeds up. He had a quick, short release which kept his pop times playable. Velleggia has an all or nothing power approach at the plate. When he makes solid contact his strength and long levers enable him to hit the ball a long, long way. Velleggia hit a home run during one game when he was out in front of an off speed pitch and had literally let go of the bat with his right hand before he made contact. That's power and it got all the scout's attention very quickly. At his size Velleggia will have to constantly work on keeping his actions short and quick but he's a good overall athlete with baseball skills. Good follow. Velleggia is also a very good student.
