John Fernandez is a 2006 shortstop/outfielder from Pembroke Pines, FL with a medium build at 5-10, 176 lbs. He is the son of former Major League star shortstop Tony Fernandez. Fernandez has good present strength and it shows in the way he swings the bat. He is a switch hitter with plus bat speed, especially from the left side of the plate. Fernandez has very quick hands from the left side and gets good extension through the ball. He can drive the ball hard up the gaps now and projects power in the future. Fernandez tends to reach a bit more right handed but still has bat speed and is a legitmate switch hitter. Defensively, Fernandez doesn't show his dad's Gold Glove flair at shortstop but he has a very strong arm and smooth athletic actions. He has a quick release and very good range. Fernandez also has played a lot of outfield and is the type of player who you could put at any of six defensive positions and he would play them well. We feel that Fernandez is going to be a top flight hitter at the upper levels. We also were very impressed with the way he played the game, he's a hustler who loves being on the field. Highest level prospect.
