2005 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Jonathan Waltenbury is a 6-3, 215 lb senior outfielder from Canada with a pro profile body and excellent present strength. He's gained a lot of strength in the last year and it shows in his overall athleticism. Waltenbury has right field arm strength with a quick exchange and a long, smooth arm stroke. He charges the ball very well and shows solid range to fly balls. He also played some first base and can play that position at the next level, although it would be a waste of his athletic ability. An intriguing possibility would be to try him at third base. His coach says that last year that wouldn't have been possible, but that his athletic ability has improved so much that it is realistic now. Waltenbury's big tool is his power bat. He generates plus bat speed and has big time power to all fields. His best power now is to center and left centerfield. He hit some balls at the professional field in Cedar Rapids that easily carried 390-400' in that direction. Last year Waltenbury tended to pull off the ball. Now he seems to dive and drive into pitches. When he reaches a happy medium, he's going to be leaving the yard everywhere with more frequency. Overall, Waltenbury is the kind of prospect that the pro scouts often flock to. He's a high ceiling power guy with athletic skills. National follow.
