2004 Underclass National Showcase
Joseph Castaldi -- Castaldi is a sophomore right handed pitcher who was on the all-prospect chart from the WWBA World Underclass in October, so we’ve seen him throw very well in the past. He has a very projectable 6-1, 180 lb frame and good athletic actions and looseness. Castaldi didn’t have the velocity he did in October, topping out at 83 mph instead of 86-87 mph but did throw 4 efficient innings. He has polished mechanics and two solid secondary pitches in his curveball and change up. In fact, anyone who saw Castaldi pitch in October knows the difference in a pitcher’s approach between an in-season team event and an out of season showcase event. Castaldi’s change up in October was a major weapon for him; in January he threw only one and that was to the last hitter he faced (it was excellent). Castaldi is a very good student who will get a lot attention from the scouts and college coaches over the next couple of years.
