2005 California Top Prospect Showcase
Robbie Selden is a 2006 RHP from Canyon Springs HS, residing in Moreno Valley, CA, with a 6'4", 190 lb. frame. Selden was named to the Top Prospect Team. With long levers, a high waist, and a loose and flexible build, Selden has a very projectable body type. He pitches from a high 3/4 arm slot and has a long and loose arm action that suggests significant future velocity gains. Selden's body control allows him to get to good extension and he has excellent rhythm in his delivery. Over the rubber he gathers well and separates on time. His fastball (82-84) has plus sink and arm side run action, allowing Selden to easily go below bats. His boring type sinker is capable of getting ground balls or being used for strikeouts. Selden currently throws a spike curveball (61-64) that has very tight rotation and big 12/6 shape with rolling action. However, a slider likely would be a better complement to his fastball and with his ability to spin the curveball, he likely can pick up the slider quickly, due to his slot and arm action. Selden works quickly and attacks hitters, keeping them on their heels. He has the ability to get hitters to swing at balls that are out of the zone because of the late action on his pitches. He has pitchability with the fastball. Physical maturity will enhance all of his stuff. Though he is a pitching prospect, Selden does handle the bat well. He has a good hand path, good bat speed, is strong, and has good balance. He is an excellent student with plus projectability and early sign type ability. It is likely that Selden will be followed closely in the spring and will be considered a steal in the spring signing period. He likely will also draw a lot of draft and follow consideration.
