2004 Underclass National Showcase
Steven Cruz -- Cruz is a lean and projectable 6-1 junior left hander who lists himself as a primary pitcher. He has a good large frame and projects nicely. After watching him both hit and pitch at the World Underclass, we’re not so sure that he shouldn’t be a primary position player. Cruz threw 3 innings and was 75-76 mph with his fastball, along with a 62-64 mph curveball and an occasional change up. His 76 mph velocity from the outfield indicates this is probably his true arm strength right now. But Cruz really whistled the bat for us in batting practice with a pretty left handed swing that projects a ton of power in the future. The ball jumps off his bat and he showed the ability to turn on the ball and get it up in the air. Cruz didn’t hit as well in games as he was longer to the ball, but his batting practice was very impressive. Keep an eye on him as both a LHP and as a hitter! Steven is a good student..
