2007 National Showcase
Abraham Ruiz is a 2008 3B/P with a 6'3'', 205 lb. frame from Pacific Grove, CA who attends Pacific Grove HS. He has a mature low waisted build with excellent present strength. Ruiz is a power hitter who is a legend in Central California for his prodigious and frequent home runs. He hits from a narrow base with a big load and coil in back and explodes to the ball aggressively. Ruiz' timing was off early in the showcase, he was overanxious to show what he could do but he settled in and showed his hitting abilities. He has an easy and fluid swing with very good extension out front. Ruiz had an at bat against LHP Kyle Long throwing 94-96 mph and was on him and battled through an excellent at bat, which showed plenty about Ruiz' hitting ability and approach. Ruiz is light on his feet for a big player and has a good feel for defense at third base and has enough arm strength for the position. We're told that he has really toned down and improved his body life during the last year and keeping at this level of conditioning will be key to his staying at third base. His bat will be his ticket, though, and he has a good one. Ruiz has a verbal commitment to Arizona State.
