2016 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Michael Payne is a 2017 RHP/3B/1B with a 6-3 210 lb. frame from Duluth, GA who attends Wesleyan HS. Large, physical frame with strength throughout body. Ran 60 yard dash in 7.72 seconds. Primary right-handed pitcher, extremely high leg kick into delivery with good balance over the rubber, gets downhill well and over front side with authority. Throws from extended high three quarters arm slot and generates excellent plane to the plate, fastball worked 82-86 MPH with very heavy life down in the zone. Showed slider with good horizontal shape and sharp tilt, also showed curveball with 11/5 shape and very good depth. Did a good job of filling up the zone with three pitches and attacking hitters. Sets up to hit from wide-based, open stance with medium-high hand set and double toe tap trigger. Loads hands deep, transfers weight well into swing on line drive swing plane, shows good bat speed with obvious strength, can square it up with authority and power when on time. Worked out defensively at 1st base, shows active footwork with comfort around the bag, fields cleanly and shows ability to pivot and make accurate throws across the diamond up to 79 MPH. Named to 2016 Southeast Top Showcase Top Prospect List. Very good student.
