2021 National Underclass East Showcase
Silas Shaffer is a 2022 C/RHP with a 6-3 175 lb. frame from Mount Vernon, KY who attends Rockcastle County. Recorded a 7.20 second sixty-yard dash time. Projectable frame with long levers and room to physically mature. Primary catcher with solid catch-and-throw skill set; receives softly from a side-saddle stance, gaining ground quickly out of his crouch and exhibits the ability to transfer efficiently across his mid-line. Energetic actions throughout the process, staying relatively in-line towards his target while displaying accurate throws to the bag. Recorded arm strength up to 81 mph from behind the plate during defensive drills. Secondary right-handed pitcher; athletic delivery with good rhythm and tempo throughout, repeats well and shows the ability to command his present two-pitch mix. Abbreviated windup to start with slightly coiled leg lift, changing the tempo at various points and using his length to work down the slope effectively. Fastball worked in the 83-88 mph range throughout his outing, peaking at 88 mph and holding steady in the low-to-mid-80s. Most high three-quarters arm slot that creeps towards over-the-top due to slight head tilt. Fastball flashes some natural arm-side run when to the bottom of the zone, sequencing it well with his 11-5 shaped curveball that has late depth to it. Good composure with bulldog mentality, attacking the strike zone efficiently and getting ahead with both his fastball and curveball effectively. Right-handed hitter that hits from a wider, slightly open stance with a high hand set, high back elbow and hanging leg lift trigger. Lofted stroke with quickness to his path and developing feel for the barrel. Mostly middle-of-the field approach with occasional line drive impact to the pull-side. Intriguing upside on the mound that will continue to improve at the plate with proper swing adjustments, while displaying an extremely sound catch-and-throw skill set. Excellent Student.
