2006 Hawaii Showcase
Herbert Chung is a 2006 3B from Aiea HS, residing in Aiea, HI with a 6'1" 200 lb. frame. Chung is strong and has a firmed up body type. On offense Chung has a long finish to his swing. He starts with a slightly open stance, is aggressive with his hips, and his hands are good. Chung has some strength and a flat swing that suggests gap line drive ability. When he is on time, Chung stays in the middle of the field well. His hips are the key to his offensive game because his hands, his swing, and his strength are all there, but his lower half is inconsistent. With more reps against quality pitching, Chung is a promising offense player. On defense he has a good set-up to the ball and has decent feet. His body control is pretty good and like on offense, his hands work. Across the diamond Chung's arm tracks well and it is a strong arm. He is a good defensive player in his stationary area and will make the plays he needs to and a few others. Chung plays hard. He gets his body in front of the ball and recovers well after knocking down tough hops and hard hit balls. Chung flashes all-around abilities that fit 3B well. His abilities will allow him to compete at college level and the consistency of those abilities will dictate what level of college ball is best for him. A JC year or two may be best (for the reps) for his overall development. Regardless, he can compete at the college level.
