Joshua Rivas is a 2022 1B/RHP/C/IF with a 5-10 170 lb. frame from Spring, TX who attends Klein Collins HS. Josh is a player who draws attention by and through his noticeable passion for the game. He has talent at numerous positions and shows a propensity to swing the bat at an advanced level. Josh is not far from being an elite player who will have a chance to play at the next level. In addition to his noteworthy ability on the field, Josh is also a stalwart student and scholar. He ran a 7.67 60 yard dash. Although pure straight line speed will never be a big part of Josh's overall game, he is a heady and instinctive runner who will always run the bases correctly and never hamper an offense. Although Josh can play several positions on the diamond, he is a primary first baseman. His natural, easy movement around the bag is sure and very consistent. His timing to field is excellent and he reads the ball off the bat well. His quick feet and smooth glove work enable him to get his 83 mph throws to his target with routine effort. Josh has certain plus upside as a first baseman. Josh also took his turn in the outfield where his advanced 86 mph throwing velocity drew noteworthy attention. Josh's athleticism and feel for the game really shown in the outfield. He is quick to position and plays through the fielding action with gathering momentum and when he triggers his throwing motion, his intent is obvious. His throws stay routinely on plane and are quite firm. Josh, unquestionably, has the talent to play in the outfield at the next level. On the infield, Josh again shows a very strong arm as evidenced by his 85 mph throws across the diamond. Although he is a tick erratic with his infield throws, he has the actions to improve. His footwork is quick and sure and his glove plays. Although he would probably be limited to third base, should an infield position other than 1B be in his future, he has the mentality, soft hands, quick feet and certain arm strength to play well at the hot corner. Josh's last defensive display came on the mound where his impressive arm strength, once again, turned heads. His slow and methodical, highly repeatable operation helped him pitch down the slope with a plan and a lot of purpose. The pace and rhythm to his pitching game is sound and shows a pure ability that is certain to help him advance to the next level. His 81-84 mph fastball shows impressive riding life up in the zone. His 69 mph hybrid breaking ball shows sharp bite at the dish and is a tough swing and miss pitch to RHH. His most mature secondary pitch is his 74 mph change-up that he tunnels out of his fastball slot and throws with the same arm quickness as his heater. His outing on the hill was quite impressive and shows that Joshua is ready for a higher level of competition. At the plate, Josh shows an instinctive and innate feel for swinging the bat. His solid build along with the noticeable strength in his forearms and hands, allow him to consistently get his barrel to and through contact with force. He is not bashful for cutting it loose and he doesn't get cheated. Ever. He flashed some occasional raw power ability that will only improve as he gains more experience. Josh is a certain prospect for play at the next level. His noticeable ability dictates that he is a candidate to be a two-way guy as he continues to raise his game and advance up the competition ladder. The athleticism is there. The obvious passion is there. The talent is there.
