2020 South Prospect Showcase
Roberto Perez is a 2022 LHP/1B with a 5-11 192 lb. frame from Corpus Christi, TX who attends Calallen HS. Roberto is a polished and poised, athletic player who is part of a tradition rich HS program. He is mature beyond his years and has a presence that dictates that he will only continue to grow his game. In addition to his skill on the ball field, he is also an exemplary student. He ran an 8.07 60 yard dash. Roberto's straight line speed will never be an issue. Offensively, he is an instinctive and heady runner who will never hamper a club when he is on the bases. Defensively, he plays two positions where a player doesn't have to be a burner. A primary LHP, Roberto has an advanced idea on how to work on the mound. His solid size and broader shoulders will enable him to carry a bit more weight and add muscle down the road. His frame can handle it. His mechanics are fairly conventional, although he has a bit of crossfire in his lower half operation. This adds to his deception. His 3/4 arm slot and whippy arm action are routinely repeated. His 75-78 mph fastball plays up in velocity because of his deceptive mechanics. The ball jumps at hitters. His three pitch secondary arsenal is also solid. His 75 mph cutter is his trusted go-to pitch. He throws it from the fastball window with FB arm quickness and it gets to the plate and just misses barrels. His 71 mph change-up also tunnels from his FB release and shows tumble and depth at the plate. Because of his lower arm slot and whippy arm action, his 67 mph breaking ball is a tad inconsistent concerning both depth and spin, but it can be a solid pitch and it shows potential. His CB is just not as consistently solid as his cutter and his change. There is a lot of promising upside to Roberto's pitching. Being a lefty truly helps. Having command over four pitches, three that are highly developed, helps even more. Roberto also worked out at first base. He shows solid footwork that is quick and smooth. He throws, naturally, quite well from this position. His 80 mph velo is only outdone by his highly accurate throws. He has a great feel for this position and could certainly play at a higher level as a 1B. At the plate, Roberto shows a balanced stance that is fairly upright. He shows a pronounced load on the back leg and releases with momentum. He has a sound feel for the barrel that is highlighted by the strength in his hands and shoulders. He can impact the baseball, and when everything is in sync, he can drive it for power. Roberto has all the makings of an advanced player. His next two years of highly competitive Texas HS ball and ultimately his productive time in a HS weight room, will go a long way in determining how far he advances.
