As a young 2005 right-hander, Carls comes from over the top and creates a good downward plane to his pitches. He is a downhill thrower who got some late run on an 80 mph fastball and showed a 61-64 mph curveball. He slowed his arm speed slightly on his curveball which decreased the rotation. We think he would get an even bigger bite on the curve if he kept his arm speed and tightened the rotation. He also plays both infield and outfield and showed a little potential with the bat. He swung around the ball in BP and when he learns to keep his hands inside he will show a more productive swing. He did get a good hit on an inside fastball for a double to right field showing some pop in his bat. Good student.
