Stephen Lumpkins is a 2008 LHP with a 6'6'', 185 lb. frame from Redwood City CA, who attends Serra HS. Selected as a Top Prospect at this event. Lumpkins is long, lanky, and rangy. He has all kinds of room to fill out. He is a very very interesting pitching prospect and though his size and being left handed are reasons, they are not the only reasons. His arm is quick and easy. The ball really comes out of his hand with minimal effort, suggesting steady velocity spikes in the coming years. He controls his body well for such a tall, young pitcher. Lumpkins gets out to good frontside extension and at times that results in a heavy fastball (82-84 in this event) that has good run. He showed armside command and threw strikes to both sides of the plate. He has good feel of his change-up. His breaking ball appears to still be in the development stages. In any case, Lumpkins has a lot of projectability and should be followed closely by major D1 programs and pro baseball. Earlier in the year (August) we saw him at 84-87 mph for a two inning stint.
