2004 World Showcase
Starken threw 3 solid innings at the World Showcase. He has a medium build with long arms, sloping shoulders and a strong lower half. Starken has a smooth on-line delivery with good hip turn and body rotation. If anything, he tends to get a bit out front and drop his elbow on occasion. Starken has a long, loose wrist that he uses well in manipulating his pitches. He topped out at 84 mph on his 4-seam fastball but varied his speeds and movement by turning over some nice 2-seam sinkers in the 77-80 mph area. He showed a good ability to mix up his spots inside and outside, too. Starken’s breaking ball was 71-74 mph and this was the pitch that he’d get out in front on. When he rushed, the curveball was harder with an early break, but when he stayed back, he threw some sharp, late 71 mph breakers. Starken is a very good student who should perform real well at the next level.
