2006 California Underclass
Daniel Duran is a 2007 RHP/OF from Brookdale HS, residing in Ecuador with a 6'1" 185 lb. frame. Duran was named to the top prospect team at the California Underclass Showcase. Duran has a strong, athletic build, with ample room to fill out and add strength. A primary pitcher, Duran has a long, clean arm action and pitches from an over the top arm slot. His arm is strong and he gets on top of ball well when his delivery is on time. Duran has good body control and is capable of developing into a power pitcher because that deliver and long action create leverage. The ball gets out of his hand well without a lot of effort. Duran's FB (84-88) at times has heavy action at plate and he can move it in and out pertty well. When on time, he tilts the FB through the bottom of the zone, which should allow him to get a lot of ground balls by forcing contact early in the count. Duran's CB and SL each have good spin and at times have sharp action. Duran shows pitchability and aggressivness with all his pitches yet can also pitch without his best stuff. He maintains a calm demeanor on the mound. A right handed hitter, Duran has good bat speed and can create easy lift at contact. He has a high step stride and an easy swing, allowing him to have excellent balance during that swing. He gets the barrel to the ball well, even with some length in his swing. Duran has good rhythm and timing which helps overcome that length. He can lift line drives and in general his hands stay inside the ball. He jumps aggressively on mistakes, has good present day power and a swing arc that suggests more in the future. In the outfield Duran gets good extension from his loose arm. His feet are good and he has an accurate and strong arm. Duran is a decent two-way college prospect at the D1 level, but his brightest future is on the mound where he is a legitimate D1 caliber prospect.
