Steven Barela is a 2028 C/RHP/UT with a 4-11 97 lb. frame from West Covina, CA who attends Bonita. Primary catcher, starts in a higher side saddled stance, gets out of the set fairly quickly and gains some ground on the transfer. Has some developing arm speed and releases the baseball from a higher slot. Delivered accurate throws around the bag, recorded arm strength up to 61 mph with a pop time of 2.25. Secondary right-handed pitcher, works from a full wind-up delivery, keeps the hands at the belt throughout and lifts the leg up to the mid-section. Breaks into an inline arm path and releases the baseball from a three-quarters slot. Displayed smooth lower-half movements down the slope and repeats his delivery well, has a natural feel for the mound. Fastball is fairly straight with some late sink, located it north/south effectively and topped it out at 65 mph. Mixed in a 12-6 curveball with some late depth, earned multiple swings and misses and can pitch backwards with it. Right-handed hitter, starts in a medium base with a high back elbow, engages the lower-half well and works into a direct bat path. Controls the barrel well throughout the zone, struggles to get off the back-side at times. Produced consistent contact to all parts of the field, recorded an exit velocity of 61 mph. Ran an 8.85 sixty-yard dash. Good student.
