16u Championship Recap: Day 4

Jordan Posway
Round one of the 16u championship bracket kicked off Saturday evening at the Lake Point Sporting Community in Emerson, Georgia.  Four teams survived the round of eight and will advance to the semifinals starting Sunday morning at 10:15. Here is a quick review of the events from the quarterfinal round:

Tri-State Arsenal survived their quarterfinal match-up against Elite Baseball Training-Chicago thanks to Juan Simmons-Ganzaroli’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hiro Mizutani commanded the hill for the entirety of the game and notched twelve strikeouts en route to being named the winning pitcher. With the 3-2 win, the Arsenal advanced to the next round of the playoffs.

The 643 DP Cougars Sterling kept their championship hopes alive with a 5-1 victory over the SA Angels Blue. The Cougars never looked back after an explosive first inning, yielding four runs. Brant Hurter allowed six hits and no earned runs in seven solid innings atop the mound.

The Rijo Atheltics overwhelmed A. Green Baseball 3-0 thanks to a wonderful outing by Sam Leach. A. Green Baseball had no answer for the Athletics’ ace, managing a mere two hits during his five-inning tenure on the mound. With their quarterfinal win, the Athletics earned a date with Tri-State Arsenal in the semifinals.

Thanks to a late five-run barrage, Marucci Raley escaped the Astros 9-2. Back-to-back RBI triples by Jacob Pearson and Ladarius Woods highlighted Marucci’s monstrous seventh inning. Austin Perrin kept the Astros’ offense at bay to secure a semifinal match with the 643 DP Cougars.

Bracket play will resume tomorrow morning at 10:15. The Rijo Athletics will square off against Tri-State Arsenal on Field 16, while Marucci Raley will face the 643 DP Cougars on Field 9.
