US Elite fends off late rally in pitcher’s duel

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a pitcher’s duel that didn’t see a run scored until the top half of the fifth, the US Elite 2020 International Scout Team would push across just enough to hold off a seventh-inning rally from a talented Elite Squad 17u National lineup to take home the 17u Florida World Series title by a score of 3-2.

Bats from both sides were relatively quiet until the second half of the US Elite lineup turned it on in the fifth inning, pushing across three runs on four hits from Carter Brady, Lenis Montesano, Ricardo Garcia and Adrian Piti, driving Elite Squad starter Nick Vieria from the game after an outstanding first four innings as he ran the fastball up to 90 mph.

Elite Squad reliever, and George Washington commit, Christopher Kahler would hold the US Elite lineup scoreless for the last 2 2/3 innings, but the three runs is all they would need to take home the title. Elite Squad would head to the seventh needing three to extend the game, but would come up just a run short. After pushing two across, they had runners on first and second representing the tying and winning runs with only one out, but US Elite starter Derek Arroyo would strand them both to finish off his complete game outing.

Tournament MVP for the second straight weekend, and the third Florida commit to take home the honors on the day, Coby Mayo, was once again spectacular in the championship game going a perfect 3-for-3 and scoring one of Elite Squad’s two runs. Mayo finished the weekend 7-for-11, walking three times while driving in five in five games.

MV-Pitcher Luis Guerrero was magnificent for the second straight weekend as he has yet to allow an earned run through over 16 innings of work in Perfect Game events in 2019. The flame-throwing righthander was dominant in the semifinals against a talented Elite Squad American lineup throwing a seven-inning shutout, allowing only two hits, while striking out 14. Guerrero also threw three shutout innings earlier in the weekend to pick up a crucial pool play win, once again allowing only two hits and striking out three.

Through two tournaments now this summer, Guerrero has thrown 16 scoreless innings, given up seven hits and walked only three, while striking out 26.


Chamberlin’s walk-off wins Rebels third 2019 title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A talented Florida Rebels 16u team battled their way back from a three-run deficit early Monday afternoon, putting up a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to walk-off the 2019 16u Florida World Series championship game.

In a game that began dominated by the pitching performance of tournament (by MVP Yoel Tejeda Jr) the Florida Rebels team refused to give up on their pursuit of the championship. After being shut out for four innings, the second half of the Rebels lineup got the scoring started putting up a pair of runs in the fifth on a couple hits, a walk and a crucial passed ball.

Two innings later, Cameron Collier would lead things off with a triple before a sacrifice bunt by Brad Myers would knot the game up at three. A walk followed by another sacrifice bunt would push the game’s winning run into scoring position. An intentional walk would put two runners on for the hero Caden Chamberlain, who, on a full count, would line a single to left field driving in the game’s winning run and sending the Rebels home with the title.

The weekend’s 16u MVP, like in the 15u division, was a Florida commit as Yoel Tejeda Jr performed well on both sides of the ball. In the championship game he got the start on the mound throwing four scoreless, one-hit innings, running his fastball up to 86 mph and striking out three. At the plate he would finish the weekend 6-for-12, including three doubles, while picking up six walks on his way to reaching base in 12-of-18 plate appearances.

The MV-Pitcher of the 16u division, Aaron Deegan, also performed extremely well on both sides of the ball, throwing 6 2/3 strong innings in the semifinal game, allowing two unearned runs and striking out six. At the plate, Deegan finished the weekend 5-for-11, including a double and a home run, adding in four walks while driving in five and scoring five times himself.

This marks the third straight Perfect Game tournament title for the Florida Rebels in 2019 – Underclass East MLK Championship, 16u East Memorial Day Classic, 16u Florida World Series.


Heyman’s stellar weekend notches FTB 15u title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Luke Heyman was outstanding over the weekend and in the championship game both at the plate and on the mound as he led FTB Tucci – Cleveland 2022 to the 2019 Florida World Series title as they took down ELEV8 Select by a score of 5-2 to cap off a perfect 5-0 weekend.

In a game that seemed destined for late excitement, those on hand were anything but disappointed. FTB would take the early lead as Cameron King would single with two outs in the second before swiping second base and being driven in on the next pitch by fellow infielder Christian Soto. FTB would hold onto that lead until the home half of the sixth when ELEV8’s Luis Delgado drove in the game’s tying run with a two-out double.

FTB’s offensive struggles would disappear in the top half of the seventh as they would send nine hitters to the plate on their way to putting up four crucial runs, two coming off the bat of the tournament’s MVP Luke Heyman. ELEV8 would not go quietly in the bottom half as they would push a run across and bring the go-ahead run to the plate with the bases loaded before FTB’s Titan Kamaka could pick up the final out of the game and grab the title.

Heyman, a catcher committed to the University of Florida and the tournament’s most valuable player, got the start on the mound for the championship, FTB’s fifth game of the weekend, throwing five shutout innings while striking out seven as he ran his fastball up to 90 mph. Heyman would go 1-for-4 at the plate in the game, driving in two huge runs in the seventh, to finish his weekend an outstanding 8-for-16, including two doubles and a triple, while driving in 10 and scoring five times himself.

The weekend’s MV-Pitcher would come from the runner-up ELEV8 Select as Jaxson Pastore threw five strong innings against a good Power Baseball 2022 lineup in the semifinal game Monday morning. In his five innings of work, Pastore would allow only one hit and strike out six on his way to leading his team into the championship game and a runner-up finish.


Hurricanes slide past Resmondo FTB to claim 14u title

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Hurricanes 14u Platinum overcame Resmondo FTB in a 6-4 victory closing the 2019 14u PG Florida World Series. The Hurricanes went on a steady run against Resmondo FTB in claiming Monday’s title.

While the Hurricanes played like champions throughout the tournament, key players helped that become a reality. Incoming sophomore Jake Randolph earned MVP honors, leading the way for the team’s offense going 3-for-4 in the championship game. Randolph hit.333 throughout the three-game series, and he and his teammate, Noah Albuquerque, recorded RBIs for the Hurricanes in the final championship game.

A rising performer, Freddy Noel Beruvides Jr., went 2-for-3 in the game. Beruvides Jr. hit .433 through five games. Andrew Ildefonso pitched for the Florida Hurricanes allowing two hits and two walks, striking out one batter in 1 1/3 inning.

Despite the loss, Resmondo’s high follow Bryan Rivera was named MV-Pitcher of the tournament. The righthander’s top performance came during Monday’s semifinals when he touched 84 mph and secured the win for Resmondo FTB allowing six hits and one walk, striking out five batters in a seven-inning game.

Tj Dunsford pitched for Resmondo FTB in the championship game, allowing six hits and two walks, striking out five batters in a five-inning game.

Three players drove in runs for Resmondo FTB including Ariel Antigua, Dunsford and Andy Hernandez.


Hurricanes conquer Next Level Prospects for 13u title

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Florida Hurricanes 13u Platinum raced by the Next Level Prospects Blue 9-2 in the 2019 Florida World Series Championship.

Representing the Hurricanes, Anthony Espinoza allowed three hits and two walks, striking out five batters in a five-inning game. Espinoza also slugged his way to a 2-for-3 performance with one run scored, hitting .333 through five games.

Samuel Soto came in as a relief pitcher for the team allowing three hits and two walks, striking out two batters in a two-inning outing.

Leading the way for the Hurricanes on offense was Niko Benestad. Benestad went 2-for-3 with one triple and two runs scored, hitting .467 through five games. Rylan Lujo went 1-for-4 for the Hurricanes with a double and one run scored. Benestad, Lujo and Espinoza each produced RBIs for the Hurricanes, as did Soto.

It was no surprise that groundbreaker Anthony Tralongo earned MVP honors for the tournament. This is Tralongo’s third MVP title in 2019 Perfect Game tournaments thus far as he finished the weekend going 9-for-14 which included two doubles and a home run while driving in eight runs and scoring eight of his own.

For the Next Level Prospects, Vince Lozano got the start,allowing six hits and three walks, striking out three batters in 4 1/3 innings.

Plenty of offensive plays led the way for the Next Level Prospect Blues.

Bryson De La Vina went 1-for-2 with one triple and one run scored. Braeden Weckman and Vince Lozano went 1-for-3 in the game, in addition to Weckman scoring a run.The team’s RBIs were collected by Weckman and Domenic Fernandez.

The MV-Pitcher for the 13u PG Florida World Series was earned by Prospect Blues’ Aden Knowles.

April 21st Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Tague Davis, IF, Louisville  The Louisville Cardinals (22-18) haven’t been able to get themselves in much of a groove this spring, their longest winning streak is 5-games, and they are (4-6) in their last 10-games.  The issue has not been the offense as the Cardinals are averaging over 8-runs per game and Tague Davis is leading the club in virtually every offensive category.  His calling card is his 70-grade power and that was on display last weekend in their series against Cal.  In the three-game series, Davis went 7 for 12, scoring 4 runs, launching 5 home runs and collected 7 RBIs.  The 6-4/220 lefthanded hitter from West Chester, PA has a pure stroke, is one of the premier power hitters in the nation and has significantly improved his plate discipline from a year ago.  After his big weekend, he is...

As the old saying goes, “all good things must come to an end” and that was the case last Tuesday when UCLA (36-3) saw their 27-game win streak come to an end in a shutout loss to UCSB.  However, the No. 1 team in the land still has their 21-game winning streak in Big Ten to protect, as they have started off league play without a single blemish.  The Bruins will remain atop our poll this week and their historical start to the season roll on.  The UNC Tarheels (33-7-1) move up to No. 2 this week after they made their biggest statement of the year by taking the weekend series from now No. 4 Georgia Tech (32-7).  No. 3 Texas (30-8) and No. 5 Georgia (32-9) both went (3-1) on the week and won their SEC series to stay in contention for the regular season title.  Florida State (28-11) had a nice bounce back (4-0) week and re-enter the Top 10 at No. 8 this...

April 14th Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Jaquae Stewart, INF/OF, Texas State  The Texas State Bobcats (24-12) are sitting in second place in the ultra-competitive Sun Belt Conference, and they have one of the most explosive offenses in the country.  They average right at 8-runs per game and can slug with the best of them, averaging almost 2-home runs per game as well.  Sitting in the middle of the order, Jaquae Stewart, is putting together a career year and is becoming the focus of opposing teams.  The 5-10/234 junior from Sinton, Tx is your classic lefthanded power hitter and is thriving in his move from Austin to San Marcos.  While it wasn’t the best week for his club, Stewart was sensational, collecting 8 hits in his 19 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, launching 5 home runs and driving in an insane 17 runs.  For the season, he is now slashing...

PG has announced the dates for Prospect Gateway events across the country - unique opportunities for young players to receive professional feedback and prepare for the next level. The Prospect Gateways are for players ages 13U-14U and serve as a qualifier for the National Showcase. Kevin Schuver, the senior director of showcases at Perfect Game, said these events are chances for players to step out of their comfort zone and show what they’re really made of. “Perfect Game Prospect Gateways aren’t just events. They’re doorways into something bigger.
