Ciccarello's RBI Double Gives MBA Win in Finals
6/18/2014
(Alec Dopp) - Following up his 3-for-4 performance in the semifinals, Jose Ciccarello (2017, Alonso HS, FL) provided the run-scoring double -- one of his two two-baggers in the game -- in the top of the first inning for MBA Pride Elite early Wednesday afternoon that proved to be the decisive factor in the 1-0 championship match victory at the 2014 16u National Championship Qualifier over Mid South Gamers. The win completed MBA's bid for a perfect record at the qualifier, finishing with a 7-0-0 mark that included an impressive run differential of +38.
Elijah Gill (2017, University Christian HS, FL) received the game's winning decision for MBA Pride Elite, logging four innings of two-hit baseball, to go with five strikeouts and one walk as his team's starting pitcher. Gill induced five ground outs, one fly out and five swinging strikes in the contest thanks to his 78-80 MPH fastball and 70-71 MPH curveball. Tyler Myrick (2016, Columbia HS, FL) came on in relief of Gill in the game, recording three complete innings in which he allowed one hit and a 69.4% strike rate, due in large part to his 83-86 MPH fastball and game-high 87 MPH velocity -- a pitch he threw for strikes at a 67.9% clip.
Scott Shearer (2015, Independence HS, MS) got the ball as Mid South's starter, allowing the one crucial earned run to cross home over five innings in which he allowed five hits, walked none and punched out none. Nine of his 15 in-play outs were provided on the ground, due in no small part to his ability to mix speeds -- throwing 25 fastballs (73-75 MPH), 11 curveballs (65-67 MPH), four changeups (68-70 MPH) and one slider (65 MPH). Parker Haberstroh (2016, Center Hill HS, MS) logged the final inning of relief for the Gamers, topping out at 77 MPH with his fastball.
